CB350/400 / Re: Fuel Tank Cleaning
« on: March 24, 2019, 07:12:37 AM »
Herein lies the problem for us newbies who need to de-rust a tank for the first time - so much conflicting info everywhere...  :-\

No false info here, i am a former plater and metal chemist, the best way to do this at home is brick cleaner and a handful of pea shingle, seal tank, agitate, drain and rinse with loads of D.I water, the DI water is important, then dry quickly and swill with WD 40, i buy it in 5litre cans, no twatting around with aerosol cans, trying electrolysis is hit and miss at home due to lack of the correct equipment and knowledge.

Maybe when #@%$ is finally sorted (hahahahaha) we should concentrate our new found political awareness on getting our MP's/ Government to wake up to this rip off process, and persuade them of the benefits of introducing some well overdue changes.
Having just had a good deal of my tax back (through various local authority/NHS) I'm only too willing to pay some tax. And yes whatever system/country you choose there is ALWAYS a fair degree of wasted money (maybe it was on me!).
#@%$ may abolish the largest free trade area we have access to so we may have duty on stuff from Europe. (Menno look out)

The duty is already piled on by the eurocrats before we even think of buying it, there is no free trade area.

Spirit of Salts or brick acid , I use SOS  cleans it so well  you need to add in caustic soda to neutralise the acid or it gets covered in surface rust instantly . Once the caustic is out then rinse with water , add in petrol/ oil mix.  Best bit its quick , couple of hours tops and cheap £3  for  500ml is more than enough  for one tank.

By applying caustic to the acids you make it harder to rinse out quickly, D.I water is whats needed and plenty of it, if we had added caustic at this stage of the process on our plating line we would have so much contamination we would of failed every time.

Parcel force send you a bill through the post, which includes all costs, you just pay it on line and the goods are delivered to you usually the next day. Parcel force collect any duties, VAT etc on behalf of HMRC
Parcel force don't collect on behalf of HMRC, they Rob you on behalf of HMRC.😄.

Copper panel pins at most big DIY chains and cut brads will take care of the wrought iron.

The tank has to be the sacrificial anode, otherwise you are plating the rubbish to the tank.

Caustic is the wrong thing to clean a tank out with, ideally you should pickle it with a solution of 10/15% sulphuric acid and a piece of stainless chain mail, seal it up shake around for a good half an hour, empty and wash through with lots of D.I water, dry quickly and apply some WD40, then make sure you have the internal filter in the tank and preferably an inline filter too.

CB350/400 / Re: Road Tax- 1978 registered bike-400/4
« on: March 06, 2019, 03:50:41 PM »
On or after April 1st this year, ie, 3 weeks, you will be able to do it at the post office Pat. It's not officially entitled to free tax until then. I will be doing my Sept 78 reg then as well. Because you are trying to do it early ( the official date each year is April 1st) DVLA would want a dating cert to prove when it was manufacturered. No point in paying for that, just wait 3 weeks.

I found it really simple at my local post office which does road tax she did it there and then and sent off my V5.
I read last night on the .gov web site that you don’t now have to apply for MOT exemption it automatically qualifies after 40 years.
Anyone else seen this.
My 400/4 is already registered tax exempt and the 550/4 becomes eligible in April
It is very, very simple Paul. A lot of people are under the impression that the day their bike turns 40 years old from the date of reg or manufacture, it's entitled to be changed to historic with FOC tax. This is wrong. The bike actually has to be in its 41st year to qualify . The new date each year is April 1st each year. Only exception is if the bike was registered Jan 1st - 7th in its in it's 41st year, DVLA will change it late the year before.
I  have another bike which still isn't entitled to Historic until April 1st this year and that's a 78 on an S reg. Letter from DVLA explaining all attached. This letter is dated May 18.

Correct Julie, but a vehicle manufactured on the 31st of December 1978, starts its 41st year on the 1st of January 2019 not the first of April, the government needs to adopt the KISS method.

Dyna-S made a big difference on both my GS1000HC and CB750F2. Can't really understand why people stick with points, or do they still have a black and white TV with vacuum tubes? Especially with the points that are available (Daichi) they are rubbish.

Maybe its about trying to keep them as original as possible or is it ok to bin something because you can't see it.

For me it's personal choice, i keep the original parts in case the next owner wants to return it to original spec.

Had one like that on my brothers Zephyr, in the end drilled it with an extra long 6mm drill followed by an 8mm, it came out then i guess the heat from the drilling done the job.
