The 350 was what everybody wanted as soon as they’d passed their test.

The “350” on the side panel meant more than the lack of L plates!

Of course, we all really wanted a 4 but well out of reach

I had a '74 K4 350 for a while (must've been 1976) before I got a 400/4. It was an OK sort of bike.  I say that because they were never going to turn heads like the IL4s did back then, but it sounded nice and had decent performance for the time.

Black face Bryan.  Here's the back.  I got it with a box full of parts supposedly all for a 550.

As per thread heading I've got this ND tacho, but I've no idea what model of bike its off.  I assume its a SOHC Honda but perhaps you knowlegable souls can enlighten me further?

I can't imagine why anyone would pay £999.95 for a chain and sprocket set.

Money laundering scam perhaps?

CB500/550 / Re: Speedo needle excessive movement

If the cable is original OEM it will have a coating on the inner cable and this is not to be oiled. Also your speedo drive can have hard and crusty grease which can effect the clock, always worth a strip down, clean and re grease  ;)

I don't think the cable is original Graham, I've cleaned the inner cable up and put some moly grease on it and the needle deviation is much reduced.

One other thing I've noticed is the speedo is grossly inaccurate.  Assuming the GPS app on my phone is correct the bike speedo reads 60 mph when the actual speed is a tad over 50 mph.  Mebbe the speedo head does need an overhaul?

That you like them is all that matters mate.

The very early road going 600cc MV Agusta four cylinder (Black Pigs) weren't nicknamed that for nothing, but they are worth a small fortune these days.

Best of luck with your resto Andy but if I was looking to do up another SOHC Honda it wouldn't be a CJ, they weren't really that desirable when they were new.  But then again mebbe thats the appeal, I'm guessing but I assume they are quite rare now?  I've certainly never seen one since the early 80's

CB500/550 / Speedo needle excessive movement
« on: June 18, 2020, 12:03:32 PM »
I think I might be being a bit over dramatic with the thread heading, but the speedo needle on my bike does flap about usually in the 40 - 80 mph region by about + or - 5 mph.  I've had a look at the drive cable innards and they don't look excessively worn, but I suppose there could be some wear on the end of the cable where it fits into the socket on the front wheel.

I'm not overly concerned with the issue, could it be wear and tear inside the instrument head itself?   I suppose after 40 odd years there will be some.  I was wondering if there was a quick fix or would it a need an overhaul of the speedo head itself?  Prior to owning this 550, I haven't had a SOHC Honda 4 for about 30 years and I seem to remember the ones I had back then did the same, so am I just fussing about nothing?

I've had road bikes bearing the manufacturers names of 3 of the big 4, but strangely enough not any from Suzuki.   The only Suzuki I've ever owned was a RM125 crosser and what a little screamer that was!

There's no particular reason for that.  I don't hate Suzukis at all, its just I've ended up with mainly Hondas it has to be said, with a fair sprinkling of Yamahas and Kawasakis too over the years.

A couple of years back I donned the rose tint glasses and bought a Yamaha RD200, I had one as my first road bike in 1975.  It was fun to ride and brought back many happy memories, but I've (for no reason I can readily explain   :o) acquired a fair amount of lard around my waistline since those halcyon days back in the mid 70's (remember the long hot summer of 76?)   and so a top speed of around 85 mph achieved by my first RD couldn't be replicated on the more recent one.   Lol
