Misc / Open / Re: Strange things people carry on bikes
« on: June 10, 2020, 12:20:29 PM »
When I first got married in the early 80's and we'd bought our first house, my wife and I did several shuttle runs to the local B & Q to bring rolls of loft insulation home on our bikes (we didn't have a car).  She had a C90 and managed two rolls per trip, I had a CB750 and got 3 rolls on for one trip, but some strange looks from on lookers whilst riding home.  Fortunately it we only lived a couple of miles from the store at the time.  Max speed (loaded) as I recall was about 25 mph!

I feel your pain mate.  Trying to rig a wiring loom when you are colour blind must be a nightmare.  Could you get a mate or relative to help even if its just marking the colour on masking tape as you've mentioned?    Do you have the relevant wiring diagram?   I have one for an F2, I'm not sure if there are differences between the wiring on the two varients though.

The weather has been unexpectedly good here this morning so it would've been rude not to get out on the 550 for a bimble around the parish.

CB500/550 / Decent quality aftermarket mirrors
« on: June 08, 2020, 06:53:12 PM »
As per title, I bought some chrome backed mirrors for the 550 cheap off fleabay.  They are OK I suppose, they look decent enough, but suffer from the dreaded blurr once you get above about 3000 rpm.  They are also quite small in diameter (100mm) compared to the ones I got with the bike (115mm)  when I bought it.  Has anyone found a decent replacement mirror supplier with products that don't break the bank and (perhaps) you can see behind with at speed?

I went for a brief ride round the parish this morning to check out the new shocks.  They are OK, but in performance terms they are nowhere near as good as the one's I've taken off.  They did have dual rate springs which the chrome ones obviously don't have but if I end up keeping the 550 I'll put the old ones back on, their ride quality is much better.

They look ok but AFAIK the 550F2 didn't have shrouds on the shocks, just plain chrome springs.

Thats true Oddjob, but I personally like the look of the half shrouds and whilst I like to keep my bike fairly original, its never going to be a concours example.

CB500/550 / Rear shocks
« on: June 06, 2020, 01:11:09 PM »
As its blowing a gale and chucking it down here,  :'(  I've retreated into the garage for the day and swapped over the black aftermarket rear shocks which the bike had on when I bought it, for these Chrome replicas I bought about a year ago,  but never got around to fitting.   They look pretty good though I do say so myself.

CB500/550 / Carburettor Jet rubber seals
« on: June 05, 2020, 07:20:08 PM »
After playing around with float heights and finding I had a small crack in one of the carb float bowl brass overflow tubes, I thought I'd sorted my fuel leak issues but alas after a short ride last week, there was a tell tale pool of fuel underneath the bike.  :(.   Determined to get it sorted once and for all, I bought a set of new O ring seals from Julie (Nurse Julie) on here and I'm pleased to say after an afternoon in the garage with the carbs off (yet again!) they seem to have sorted the issue.   I have to say the old ones virtually fell apart as I prised them off,  they definitely needed replacing.   So a quick vote of thanks from me to Julie for sending  the replacements so quickly and I will take the bike for a much longer ride over the weekend (weather permitting) to make sure everything is now hunky dory.  I do need to balance the carbs again, but they don't seem to be too far out according to my short test ride this evening.  The moral of the story I guess is if you have the carbs apart doing other work and you don't know when the seals were last renewed, change them anyway.

If you opened it there is usually a battery pack inside charged from the cell on top.

About 30 seconds after I took that photo, a Police car drove past, the coppers stared at me wondering what I was up to but kept on going.  I think perhaps if I had been messing about with the box they might have stopped thinking I was about to vandalise it!     ;)

One of those grey boxes at the side of the road.  This particular one is a couple of miles from my house, the road is a A165.  I've passed it many times and wondered what it was for.  There is a small solar panel on the top and the whole thing is no more than 3 feet high.  I'm assuming its a traffic counter, but I really don't know hence the question.  Are any of our members Grey box experts??

I was going to say is it cloudieronthecoast ?

We had the sunshine yesterday Steve, its the sea breeze that keeps the temperature down here.  We live on the Flamborough peninsula so we have sea on more or less 3 sides, its like living on a small island at times.  The sea keeps the coastline cooler in the summer months, but the bonus is it also keeps us warmer than a few miles inland during the winter months.  Its rare to get frost here.  The thing to do when its cooler-on-the-coast is to jump on your bike and head inland!   :D

Misc / Open / Re: Lifespan of a helmet
« on: May 27, 2020, 07:14:14 AM »
A common response to the question, 'How long should I keep my helmet?'  is 'How much is your head worth?'

You could draw a parallel with old tyres that haven't done much mileage, so are road legal from a tread depth point of view, but have gone hard and perhaps have cracked with age.  Is it false economy to keep tyres (and helmets) longer than perhaps you should and risk them failing when you need them most?

We are all individuals and all have our own views on stuff like this.  I normally look to change helmets about every 5 years, but a bit like Steve, I had a couple of RX7 Arais that I really liked that I probably kept longer than I should've.   I changed to Shoei a few years back cos again, like Steve, I found the Arais to be noisy.
