Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / Re: keys

Those locks don't have numbers marked on them. The only option is to drill the old one out and fit a new replacement (Genuine and pattern ones are available) and they are not too pricey.

Remember taking my step father and father in law on the back of my 400/4 in the early 1980's. They both were always talking about 'when bikes were real bikes' etc. and all the bikes they (supposedly) rode before and after WW2 but both of 'em leaned the wrong way when I went round a corner !  Mind you Cathy's old auntie Vera was an ace pillion passenger. Funny how all of 'em hugged you tightly rather than grabbing a part of the bike to hang on to.
They probably held on to you due to British bikes, any part they held onto probably rattled loose and fell off before journey's end!

Project Board / Re: CB500/550 K1/K2 Rebuild
« on: August 10, 2020, 09:14:05 PM »
550 barrels on a 500 bottom end was a popular upgrade back in the day, but it involved machining the crankcase mouths out to suit the larger diameter liners. You'll have a lot of fun with that bike, nice little middleweight that handles nicely. Never, ever stamp on the gear lever to shift down, the forms are easy to damage, probe to bending, and near impossible to get now at reasonable prices. Welcome by the way!

SOHC Singles & Twins / Re: CD175A Sloper Elecric start
« on: August 08, 2020, 09:19:27 PM »
The generator rotor and sprocket will be the same as the 12volt CB175, as the battery determines the charging voltage on  that system, we converted manyvCD175's to 12volt electrics over the years. Change the coil, flasher unit, horn and bulbs, fit 12volt battery, and job done. The 6volt starter IS a fairly unique bit of kit though. That said, the yanks being lazy buggers had an electric start C50 in the early 60's.

Revving hard through the gears us what the CB was designed for, up to the red in all gears they fly along for what they are. The CD being a commuter bike produces it's torque lower down the range, thanks to the single carb, plus only having 4 gears as opposed to the CB's 5 speeds. All Honda's of that era thrived on revs, my CB175 used to outrun 250 Super Dreams to 75+. If as you say the CB is in fine fettle, once it's warm give it some stick and it's a great little bike, really wish I hadn't  sold mine a few years back as I miss that hard revving little motor.

If there is 20mph difference between them, there is something seriously wrong with the CB 175, worn cam or timing chain, damaged valves or broken rings, a CB in good order should easily do 80+mph, so if it can't, something is very wrong with it!

I don't have an issue with the brake squeaking, I worry if it stops squealing in normal use! Also, yes, originally pads were asbestos, these days it's not allowed in manufacture (although old stock is okay to use in UK)

The mixture becomes weaker as you undo the screw, richer as you screw it in. Sounds to be a little rich being only one turn out

« on: July 20, 2020, 02:33:08 PM »
It is strange how fast time.passes, there are probably quite a few on here who joined after Bitsa's passing.
To sum Ralph up, he did not suffer fools gladly, and made it crystal clear, and in his eyes anyone buying pattern parts when genuine was still available was most certainly a fool, regardless of their reasoning. He was a fountain of great knowledge about these bikes, and would gladly help anyone as long as they weren't French!
The reason he has the French was he had to live in France as his wife inherited quite a large property there and he was forced to live there. He hated french people, their language, their food, cars, dreadful excuse for beer, and the fact they were all insane as they drove on the wrong side of the road!
He also had a wicked sense of humour, and loved getting into some of the banter that went on, and his final joke was to pass away on Graham's (Trigger) birthday, so he wouldn't be forgotten.
So, happy birthday Trigger, and Ralph, if there is a next life, have a cold English beer and play the Quo loud, we won't forget you.

CB750 / Re: 750 f1 fuel leak
« on: July 16, 2020, 04:53:11 PM »
I've known a few people have a go at repairing them, BUT the tap cover plate is riveted on, and no internal parts or packing was ever sold separately by Honda. Only the filter sick and large rubber washer that seals the tank to tap join, and they are very pricey for what they are.

Also, inline fuel filters often cause more issues than they solve, there are some that use them, but most of us don't.

CB750 / Re: Recommended Source for Condensers
« on: July 16, 2020, 12:51:57 PM »
I used to use Lucas car condensers, as fitted to Morris Minors or Landrover petrol engines. Used to cost around £1 each at the time, and genuine Honda ones were around a tenner each at that time. Like Bryan I fitted them beside the coils, and they never failed there. I think the heat and vibration of the original location was often the reason for failing.

Originally it would have been applied AFTER the laquer as not all markets had that sticker. All started because of U.S. safety regs.

That would suggest the tap is leaking through, could be bad washers under the screws holding it onto tank
The F1 tap is held on by the large gland nut Bryan rather than the internal screws of the pre K5 series of tanks. Sadly these taps when worn or getting old do leak past the tap packing, but it is not available as a spare. A new tap is the only real cure, and they are crazy expensive compared to the earlier K series taps

To be honest, the only orange bike I'd have would be a Jota.  ???
The only time I'm happy to see anything Italian (car, bike, clothes, people) is orange, as in on fire burning!
