CB350/400 / Re: Front Brake rotor
« on: August 30, 2024, 02:28:11 PM »
I seem to remember that the 1st production British  bikes with disc brakes fitted  had cast iron rotors. Think Honda's were stainless steel...unsure what grade of SS though.

Thanks for the positive comments on this and the microwave transformer spot-welder. Always encouraging when members spur you on.

JoJo (Steve) is going to be a way for a few weeks...so agreed to rough polish the other three carbs for him. Then I will send a pic to 'Miss Diane'  ;D at Prestige Electroplating, as she was the one who encouraged us that the carbs could be recovered successfully.

Left my mate 'Dodgy Roger' playing with his home-made vapour blaster yesterday. He was using a submersible pump to pump the water/glass slurry.... . I doubt that the pump is up to the job and will wear out in no time but always great to see people 'have a go' and hope I am proved wrong. He's got it in a nice cabinet though made of stainless steel with a pneumatically controlled top opening cover. Will post some pics on here. It definitely needs a windscreen wiper adding to the inspection window though.

Anyone elso had a go at a DIY vapour blaster?

Definitely not me Ash. I never had a moped but went straight to a CB160 at 17👍

Ha ha ..I started on a C200 90cc sports then quicky to a CD175A sloper that I passed my test on. Had a CB160 but never really got on with it.

I seem to remember that a member here had a lovely SS50 moped and sold it to possibly James May and it ended up in DS museum. Could be wrong though  :-[

I'm 99% sure he has one Ash. I offered my RSA to David Silver for his museum and was told they already had one.
Maybe if you call them and ask for Charles Cheshire he might measure their tank for you?

He's evidently got a red one Dave according to his lists. I will be going to his 400 event ... maybe that's the time.

Seem to remember he got his SS50 from someone on here ... was that you?

Another great Ash invention hot on the heals of the microwave dent remover :D.
Well done Ash, cracking result I bet Mr Honda would have like to have seen the originals like those!
Now......back to the RSA ;)

RSA project stalled at the 'mo Dave until I know the EXACT positioning of the centre section on the petrol tank. I wonder if DS has one in his museum?

Steve (JojoTut on here) who's carbs they are asked what I used after Prestige stripped the chrome and nickel but not all of the copper.

This is what I used to remove the remaining copper plating  & give it a rough polish. Started out as 6 squares of el-cheapo green Scotchbrite on the arbor that you usually mount polishing mops on. Very forgiving and gets into the nooks & crannies really effectively. No need to cut out circles, they end up circular fairly quickly anyway and the setup lasts for ages before they wear down too small to use effectively. Polishing motor came out of the skip at work after we got flooded in 2013. It just needed new bearings.

Managed to bring one of JoJo's 750K0 carbs up to scratch. I have bead blasted the rest of his parts but the other three are down to him to polish now as I need to crack on with my own stuff. Proves you can remove the chrome and recover them to a decent standard...one in the eye for all of the Social Media Facebook experts who said I was wasting my time. Still a hint of copper but that should buff off.

Hi Ash,
Just had a message from the AJ guy here and he says it's the same as his 16MS as I thought.

Ian

(Attachment Link)

When I Googled that though Ian, the 16MS underside looked different but the Matchless one I posted looks identical. What do you reckon?

Ted ..on the 500 tank the filler hole is off centre so on the side of my tank with the dents in it, it would be difficult to get anything inside, even with fancy bends. It takes a lot more force than you would think to press a deep dent out. For anyone with dents in a painted tank the guy not far from Mathewsons Auctions (think he is in Middleton N. Yorks) is magic at getting dentds out without damaging the paint. JamesH put me onto him ..not cheap though about £150 to take a dent out but much cheaper than a repaint.

132
Dave .. yes I have the wavy strip and slide hammer etc but I found that it's best to put a metal block on the tank and use it as a fulcrum with a bar or screwdriver passed through the eyelet of the welded tab. You also need to apply heat to the area. Bike tanks are probably thicker than car panels and the dents are on awkward curved areas. It does seem to take a lot of force in order to 'move' the metal.

133
How do you avoid burning a hole in the tank?

Short time and controlled current...never burned though yet.

134
Made this to pull lots of dents out of a CB500 Four tank.

NO this is not the 500 tank you kindly passed onto me Trigger ...I will let you have that one back.

Plan is ludicrous really. I have a beautiful Candy Jet (Jade) Green K0 paint set done by Menno a couple of years back pre-#@%$. A perfect NOS Candy Custom Gold tank with a pair of decent panels. However, I want to have a go at candy painting and the K0 came in Starlight Gold not Candy Custom Gold. So that's going to be this one is going to be. Well, that's the plan. Then all of my painting escapades will be over and I will hang up my guns for a bit.

Made from two scrap microwave transformers, timer module off eBay and one of my customers heavy duty solenoid switches (they use my automated test system in Hampshire & Lithuania and have sent me lots of samples over the years to set up the testing of their product range.)  I had to use two transformers in series connection in the end as one transformer didn't provide enough welly to geta decent weld.

Plenty of interest on here... you must have left just after I joined. So welcome back !

I bought a basket case 250RSA last year ... trying to make it one of the best around. Managed to get a full top end NOS apart from the camshaft.

As Laverda Dave says .. I am doing my paintwork (Nassau Blue) at the moment and stuck for the dark blue centre area dimensions on the fuel tank.
