CB500/550 / Re: Testing carb float levels with water?
« on: May 15, 2018, 05:04:51 PM »
May sound a daft question but am just rebuilding my carbs and wondered if i can test the float level using water (off bike of course !!!)

Just hate messing around with petrol all over the place

But maybe water has some different physical property from petrol that means its not feasible

Also does the level need to be about 2mm below the bowl/body joint from memory?

I found that testing with water doesn't work!

I had a fuel drip from the float bowl overflow pipe on my 400/4. It had new float valves but I checked the one that was dripping for dirt and made sure it was seating ok. Still dripping.  :(

I'd read that the brass overflow pipes sometimes crack and cause a leak so I took off the float bowl again and filled it with water. No leaks, so it must be ok, right? Wrong.

When I checked the bowl again with fuel it didn't leak at first, but after a minute or so it started dripping very slowly and the outside surface of the external pipe was wet. It must be finding a way down the side of the pipe between the aluminium bowl and the pipe.

I won't check with water again.  >:(

The list of private and club bikes on display is in this month's free Motorcycle Monthly.  That'll give you some idea of what's on show. No trader list unfortunately.

I'll be there with my mate, peteberr. It's well worth a visit if you've not been before. I got some bargains last time and some ideas for my build.

That's not a great advert for the quality of their work. I hope the ones they sold were better than that.  :-[

I may be wrong, often am, but I think the best way is to move the spacer out of line enough to get a drift on the inside of one bearing and knock it out. Then you can knock the other one out from the other side. I've not heard of anyone knocking them both out together. HTH.

I think they need to fail more leaky cars and vans.
I'm fed up with dodging oil slicks on the road and even when walking on the paths.

Too true. A lot of it is from lorries and knackered old vans. 😣

These new regulations also apply to classic cars and do place an emphasis on owners to ensure their vehicles are in a roadworthy state. While an MoT certificate will no longer be compulsory, drivers and riders may still present their vehicles for a voluntary MoT test and it remains their responsibility to ensure that vehicles have no defects that would see it fail the government tests when they take to the public roads.

And that will be the ball breaker, insurance companies will look for the slightest excuse not to pay out.

That applies every day to every vehicle now. If on the public road your vehicle must be roadworthy.
No change there.

I assumed they were to stop the link pivoting around on the ball joint and fouling on other carb parts, one of mine was broke when I bought it 34 years ago....   its still the same with no issues.

Cheers. That makes sense. I may or may not put new ones on. 🔧

Do these thin plates actually serve any purpose? The carbs are linked together by other links and shafts.  ???
