The bearing doesn't feel great, quite gritty when spinning it.

It does not take much dirt in a dry bearing for it to feel gritty. I would be looking at more cleaning to ensure any carbon deposits are not the cause. As the bearings have a good wear life I suspect the death knell is corrosion caused by standing for a long time.

Sorry I slightly misunderstood your question.
As has been said the current draw of a modern H4 Quartz Iodine bulb might be a tad high, the other consideration is the dip pattern cut off  might not be good.

I am a fan of fitting an LED bulb as I did originally on my 400. Beware of cheap ones off eBay I had one that stopped working after just a few on & off cycles.
I sent a message to LED classics to find the right bulb as the important heat sink can cause issues of being too long when fitted either inside the light unit or outside. Again as the reflectors were designed for the build design Honda used there will always be a compromise in terms of scatter and dip cut off.
If you search the posts Oddjob did a lot of research on this with photos of the result of using different bulbs. I suspect like moths are attracted to light we are attracted to big Lumen numbers. In the end that's why I fitted a  complete headlight designed from the off for LED only use so the reflector gives a good dip cut off and a nice high beam plus low current draw.

CB500/550 / Re: Has anyone used these coils?
« on: May 27, 2024, 07:51:55 AM »
Are the red and white wires shown the ones on your new coil as they look very long?
If they are then look at polarity markings on the coils themselves they should be marked +ve & -ve.
As the points earth the LT side of the circuit you need to ensure that the polarity matches.
So the negative side goes to yellow or blue for the respective coils. I would consider making up wires of the correct colour.

Might be worth a PM to Laverda Dave he did a 400 gearbox rebuild earlier this year.

If you mean the part of the shaft where the oil seal sits I'm pretty sure the bearing will come off - just dont heat it and destroy the O ring.

My 500 headlamp is  a standard UK style 7" unit.
It has the three lugs similar to those on the old sealed beam headlights.

I fitted a Land Rover Defender 90 type LED headlamp unit but pretty much any old style 7" headlamp will fit.

Iirc there is an O ring between that collar and the gears so heat would ruin that.

It would be good if someone makes the two bushes for the main carb spindle.

Have you tried switching the front bulbs with the rear?

Tested the front bulb holders using a test lamp?

Sounds like a problem with the ignition circuit not the solenoid as that only operates the starter motor when you press the start button. I would be checking the fuse box at the back where the wires are soldered on.

Update: Plus even suspect the ignition switch itself.

With some LED's they need connecting with the right polarity - hope I'm not insulting your intelligence.
Some LED's are not Polarity sensitive but probably  most are.

I tested mine with a slave battery - some come with good instructions.

Good bit of Metalwork there Dom - always a nice feeling to make something yourself.

I have tried to put some detail into what I have done on this project Phil in the hope of sharing my journey including any  setbacks to help others who want to have a go at a 500 so it soon turns into 54 pages (to date).

That's not counting the raft of individual questions I posted on the CB500/550 section to help with the build when I was unsure what went where etc. It still surprises me that I have forgotten some of what I learnt on the 400 build.

The build so far covers some 18 months with obvious static periods due to the winters. I am delighted that I have had the engine running - if this build is like my 400 one I will slow down as it nears completion as I do not want it to end.

I have a check list on my detailed spreadsheet for items that need to be torqued up, checked etc. It is by no stretch of the imagination all original nor concourse  or "finish perfect" like the one Ive seen on the USA site.

It's a keeper for me to enjoy whilst I still have the health to ride a motorcycle - I will probably never sell it. Purists will not like my LED front & rear lights or my lack of the original fork ears & gaiters to mention just a few items.

I really do appreciate all the advice, pointers, tips plus some free spare parts given to me by generous members here. When I fit the tank & panels I will upload some more photos. Lastly my thanks to the suspended member Oddjob/Ken who continues to help me outside of the forum.

Looking really good and I agree those pipes look good.

Would love a bike lift like that, maybe next year...

If you have the room and the funds a bike ramp does make life a lot easier - I was able to do lots of work sat on a stool or chair - much easier on my back. Being able to have my frame on the ramp albeit with a supplementary scissor stand meant I could fit the engine with no wheels fitted using the centre stand and staps to keep it stable. Mine has a removable panel at the rear section to make wheel removal easier.

Hardest job I had was getting the ramp out of the packing case and up my slightly sloping driveway into the garage - they are quite heavy.
