CB500/550 / Re: front brake
« on: July 13, 2020, 12:04:27 PM »
You gave the answer yourself, you are expecting way too much from a 1960's designed single piston brake. It was terrific when it hits the market in it's day, compared to the drum brakes of Brit bikes like the bonnie. But for someone used to today's multi piston and disc brakes it is probably as scary as my teenage daughter climbing into my 1958 Landrover with drum brakes and no servo/synchromesh, power steering etc after her driving school modern eurobox!

Unfortunately as you well know, pods are ALWAYS a compromise when it comes to carb set up. Honda spent a lot of time on R&D of the carbs/filter set up to suit the engine and standard exhaust. You are probably about as far as it can be sorted in it's current form, incorrect filters and incorrect exhaust both play such a huge part in the overall running characteristics of the engine. There is a school of thought around using part of the standard airbox to carb rubbers to act like a bell mouth inside the pod filter. It does something to help sort the airflow through the carbs, but I have no practical experience of this, but a couple of others on here have. Finding their posts may be the next move, rather than keep throwing money at it with no real benefit.

At the risk of upsetting purist's, why not fit European style lower bars and the cable to suit, they are plentiful and easily available. It would ride and handle a lot better as well without the wheelbarrow handlebars fitted to U.S. models!

I agree with Bryan, replace the seal, in the great scheme of things they are cheap. What price do you put on your life? With a new seal and a thorough clean of the groove it sits in, clean the meatal edge around the circumference of the pad, (,even if you're fitting new pads!) smear the metal edge of the pad with a little bit of copper grease and don't forget to clean and grease the pivot, then you will have a safe reliable brake again.

What is it? / Re: What bike is this tacho off?

Looks to be the same as the one on Mrs Hairy's 650 shitehawk (oops, Nighthawk) which is an SOHC, a last gasp stretching and stroking if the 500four motor.

Our local engineering and parts supply place years ago used to have a catalogue of chains from Westinghouse, including hi vo/Morse chains. At the time he was getting primary chains from Westinghouse for around a third the cost of genuine Honda ones. Absolutely no difference in appearance or longevity.

I'm old school as well, but I'm in the Avon camp. Roadriders give a good grip and reasonable mileage, a modern update on the 70's Roadrunners. Inspire dangerous amounts of confidence through the twisty bits  with what are very heavy (by today's standards) bikes. My recommendation is based on my hard ridden 750F1

SOHC Singles & Twins / Re: CJ250T

They were the last Honda 250 "learner" bike as i remember before the 125 restriction came in, could be wrong there the memory is getting old
No, the last ones were the Superdream 250's Bryan, as when the law changed they became worthless, as no one wanted one after passing the test, they were only a couple of mph faster than the last unrestricted CB125 twins, and the unrestricted 125's started climbing in price, a bit like unrestricted mopeds Fizzy's and AP50's and SS50's did.

Surely it would be easier to adapt the carrier rather than the barrels. Looking at it I'd imagine it wouldn't be hard.

How are you supposed to take tension off the chain for removal and fitting BTW
Let's be sensible here guys, would you REALLY want to risk putting a shoddy Italian copy of an engine part into a beautiful Honda engine???
No way on earth I would!

CB750 / Re: F1 top yoke fork clamp bolt

Which bolt are you referring to, the one that holds the yoke to the steering stem or the pair that clamp the top of the fork legs?

F1 top yoke bolt SHOULD be M7, in an effort to reduce the risk of overstressing and cracking the clamps. If a PO has drilled it to 8mm, look for another yoke to be safe as you cannot tell if it's been overstressed until it lets go, which you do not want while braking hard!

Somebody fitted 3 inch overs for a chopper look?
Are the springs the same length with a spacer?
30mm is barely over an inch Bryan  (bloody foreign metric measurements!)

Not with the carbs on the engine sadly, but at least you can check what jets are fitted before deciding what to do.

In 40+ years they could be from a different Honda due to accident damage/rusty stanchions etc and someone fitted whatever was available bat the right money.
