CB500/550 / Starter motor testing?
« on: March 05, 2013, 07:51:10 PM »
I've had a problem with the starter motor struggling to turn the bike over. Fitted a brand new battery today and was hoping this would help but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I've stripped and cleaned the starter motor and the brushes are within tolerance as stated in the book. After reassembly it still doesn't appear any better so I've measured the voltage drop when the starter is operated and I,m getting a drop of about 3volts.  Does this seem to high a voltage drop or would you expect this value? Any other advice or suggestions would be great fully received.

All fixed.  Not quite sure what the problem was but I took the kickstart assembly out, examined it closely and couldn't find any problems. I reassembled it taking my time and it felt better when it went back. Fired her up and she sounds lovely.   I can confirm that it is possible to take the kickstart shaft out by accessing the circlip from the sump with a pair of bent nose circlip pliers. It's a little more difficult replacing it but it can be done.  Thanks for your advice.

I'm pretty sure that the leg was located in the slot as I previously had problems with the ratchets not disengaging. I doesn't sound like ratchets, it almost sounds like a bearing may be spinning in its casting. Gonna drop the sump tomorrow and have a look inside to see if I can see anything.  I'll keep you informed on my findings.

I seem to think that if I take the sump off  I can get to the circlip in order to remove the kickstart shaft but I may be wrong.  Previously before I built up I had a snag with the kickstart ratchet not disengaging but I fixed that, or so I thought!!

CB500/550 / Engine rebuild, what's gone wrong?
« on: February 25, 2013, 01:13:00 PM »
Hello all. After rebuilding the bottom end of my 550 it was time to fire it up today and see how it sounded. The answer was Terrible!!  Initial problem was the starter wasn't working but that could be a flat battery or missed a wire somewhere. I decided to kick it over and she fired up pretty much straight away but I have a terrible noise from the kickstart shaft. When I start to give it revs the kick start is jumping/rattling and the noise gets louder. Any ideas what I've done wrong?

I'm aware sand isn't the correct material to use but its cheap and readily available. It was a one off use so the break down of the sand didn't really matter. I did the blasting in the garden and the used sand just went into the garden grass. I used about half a bag of kiln dried sand.   Not professional, not healthy, but it worked!!

As for preparation goes I used a paraffin parts washer to get the main oil and crud off, then used a wire brush or Dremel wire wheel to get any old paint off the bottom casing. For the barrels it was a little more difficult cleaning between the fins so I decided to sand blast the fins which worked well. I made a simple sand blasting gun and got some cheap kiln dried sand for £1 a bag from b&q, connected to the compressor and bingo. The fins came up really clean and a great finish for paint. Just make sure you blown all the sand off after as it goes everywhere.  Hope it helps.

Not great quality pics but they should give you an idea of what it could look like when finished.

I've have found simoniz aluminium paint and gloss black looks really good.  I didn't bake it in an oven like suggested  but I did use a decorators heat gun on the paint for a fair while to get it nice and hot.  If I can find some pics of my engine i will post them on here.

Might be worth checking if they are stainless? That may cause you extra problems.

Not sure which bolts you mean? Are they m6? Is the engine still in frame?  If you can get to it then drill them out with a slightly smaller drill say 4.8 or 4.9. You should then be able to break up the remainder of the thread with a small point and pick it out of the thread.  If you damage the thread then use a helicoil.

CB500/550 / Re: Ultrasonic cleaning??
« on: January 12, 2013, 09:57:19 PM »
I,m beginning to think a can of carb cleaner is the way ahead. The bike ran real sweet before rebuild so I'm reluctant to fiddle to much. A mate used ultrasonic cleaning for his kawasaki z9 carbs and he wasn't to impressed and ended using a can of cleaner to finish them off.  Thanks for the advice.

CB500/550 / Ultrasonic cleaning??
« on: January 10, 2013, 05:48:26 PM »
Hi.  I'm looking for advice on ultrasonic cleaning for some cb550 cards. The carbs are pretty good and the bike went well before I stripped it so I'm reluctant to change any settings or fiddle to much as I'm no expert with carbs. They are a little dirty and could do with a clean before refitting and I'd like advice on ultrasonic cleaning. How much for a set of 550 cards? Do the carbs need to be broken down?  How good is ultrasonic cleaning? Any hints would be great fully received.
