Thanks for the photos. Sounds painful I know but it looks a bit taller than I'd hoped. How tall is it from the  headlamp cutout to the top of the screen?

CB500/550 / CB550 K3 engine oil - what to use.
« on: July 20, 2015, 09:41:39 AM »
Just read an article on research done by a US Research lab part sponsored by MCN which came to the conclusion that the claims made by the oil companies for using motorcycle-specific 10-40 engine oil are simply to strike fear into bikers to make them use the greatly overpriced product when in fact they offer no benefit over modern "ordinary" (and much cheaper) automotive engine oils. They make the point that modern 10-40 automotive oils are designed to meet the needs of modern high-revving cars anyhow. A mate of mine who has been a helicopter engineer all his life and is a fund of common sense says the same and uses ordinary 10-40 in his CB400F. As I'm coming up to an oil change the question is what does everyone else use?

Final final comment is that on the NGK website it states that there is absolutely no effect on plug performance or potential damage to anything if you use resistor spark plugs with resistor caps.

Final comment - I've checked and I have 5K Ohm NGK -plug caps on the bike. I found a previous thread on the subject that says you should use resistor plugs with NGK 5K caps i.e. DR7ES which is what I have, and it's probably why David Silver and Wemoto etc list them as the standard plug for the K3.

if you could include a "humble" 500 ?

how about Calne ,on the 25th

Brighton is far to south

You'd be more than welcome but my idea was for a local meet for Kent/Sussex/Surrey. That sort of stretches the ideal meet area from Marina Drive in Brighton to Whiteways at Arundel.

Why is life so complicated. How do I tell if I have resistor caps?

Got sidetracked lately but now back on the rails. Brighton seems the most convenient to start off with, but would avoid weekdays and favourite would be Sunday mid-morning. Can't do next Sunday as I'm camping with the tribe but the Sunday after would be good (20th July I think)

I got a Puig as suggested by Mike above but it came without the fixing brackets (grrrrr) and I didn't particularly think it suited the bike so I sent it back. Still searching

I'd like to think that the previous owner of my bike had spent hours on research and testing to identify the optimum NGK plug for each individual cylinder and that he wasn't in fact some dickhead who threw in whatever was lying around in his workshop. Anyhow I've fitted the standard DR7ES and it will come as no surprise to any K3 owner to read that it has made no difference to the tickover and it still sounds like a dog giving birth. Can someone please explain the "clear-tube method of checking float levels on the P46 carbs and tell me where to fit the aforementioned clear tube?
