CB500/550 / Re: Fork seal help please
« on: September 12, 2018, 07:56:43 PM »
Just searched through the garage rubbish for the old seal but its gone. Must have been emptied out. There wasn't a spacer on it when I removed the old seal and have no idea what size it was. Serves me right, should have checked. Maybe I should just go for a 35x48x14 or fit a 3mm spacer.

Yep, that's right Graham but apparently it's now 91255-KBH-003 according to DSS? In any event, the seal supplied is the right spec, it's 35x48x11 but doesn't seem to fit. Just had a thought, maybe they are the wrong fork legs? I will go and measure the other one, hang on a mo...

I have a 3.3mm gap between the new oil seal and the circlip, see picture. The one without a seal in is 14.3mm from seat to circlip, so an 11mm deep seal is never going to fit snug. The only markings I can find on the lowers are 2 and HF?

It seems that 35x48x14 seals will fit but the correct size wont? Any ideas welcome?

Sye

CB500/550 / Fork seal help please
« on: September 12, 2018, 05:34:37 PM »
I have refurbished my forks on my 500 K1 and fitted one of the seals, genuine Honda, part number 91255-KBH-003 from DSS. It is fully seated but there is a good sized gap between the top of the seal and the circlip. Is this normal? I would have thought that the clip would sit on top of the seal to stop any upward movement?

TIA, Sye.

Had my gauges done by Peter and had to post this as a recommendation of his outstanding work. To say I'm delighted is an understatement, they look like new. The picture below doesn't do them justice.

Metzeler, great looks and handling, will look up codes if you want but similar pattern to Conti

Strange you should say that as I've more or less decided on Metzeler Perfect ME11 3.25 - 19 54S for the front and Perfect ME77 3.50 - 18 56S for the rear.

I'm just about to get my hubs spoked and am shopping for the hoops. I would have chosen Avon or Continental but both only do a 4.00x18 rear which they don't recommend for a 1.85 rim. There are some available in the sizes I need but I have no experience of the makes.

What make do you all recommend that do a pair in 3.25x19 and 3.5x18 please?

Could be  vacuum in the tank caused by a blocked breather. Take the fuel cap off when it conks out and if air rushes in it could be the culprit.

CB500/550 / Anyone fitted an Electrex Reg/Rec
« on: August 25, 2018, 04:37:27 PM »
Have any of you fitted the replacement RR24 from Electrex World to a 500 please and if so, where did you place it? I've attached mine to the original point on the bracket but I'm not overly happy with the installation as it could swivel if the bolt came undone.

There is an alternative, I could use the original captive nuts on the right side and make an angle bracket to hang it underneath. I am interested in finding out what others have done before I spend another half day messing about.

Thanks, Sye.

Please tell me you greased up the inner steel surface of the sprocket carrier, if not take it off and do it before it trashes itself in a couple of years.

Yep, thanks Oddjob, gave it a liberal smear with molybdenum disulfide grease.

Hmmm, need a bit of guidance here please. I've rebuilt the rear hub with new bearings, greased it up and put on the L/H thread retaining ring using the correct tool thingy. It's tight, very tight in fact but still doen't sit flush to the carrier face. I have measured the gap using feeler gauges and can get a 0.12mm feeler in there. All bearings were drifted in using a bearing tool of the correct size and sit tight on the shoulders and was spotlessly clean prior to the work being carried out.

Should the ring be flush to the face or is a small gap normal? I am concerned about applying any more pressure as it is already very tight.

The old school way was to put diesel in the bore and leave it till it soaked through.

Here's the result of my efforts, all dimensions are correct although it could look a little prettier I suppose. Fits fine and seems to do the job. Just waiting a day or so for the paint to dry fully and then assemble.

I got a air box from Germany or was it Holland some years ago that had one of those plates Ken. Not sure if it was for the European 500 four that had that scoop/ram air top, as we had the tool tray  ;)

Are you saying I don't need it Graham, the parts fiche shows it fitted on the UK K1?

Are you on drugs Sye, that's a pic of the first part you were after.  :) :) :)

Yep, that's the part I'm after Oddjob.

I also need dimensions of the second one I pictured. Dohh, serves me right for going off at a tangent. I should have started another thread.
