CB350/400 / cutting back lacquer finish?
« on: June 05, 2020, 06:38:26 PM »
Sorry to return to this thread but I've now completed spraying the tank with Halfords petrol resistant lacquer, taking on board earlier comments ! But I've been hearing /reading about cutting back and polishing after lacquer application . Is this necessary or not to be done with this type of lacquer? - the finish looks quite good and I'm quite pleased for a rattle can job! The base coat was a metallic blue, the more I read the more confused I become!

Hope you don't mind if I tag into this thread but I'm also near to the stage of applying lacquer to a rattle can sprayed tank. For my sins I used a Halfords Dark Blue metallic (I just liked the colour!) and suddenly this query crops up, fortuitous or not I can't say. I've found the 2K and the reviews seem positive but the seller is , thank fully , honest enough to admit that he's not sure if it's compatible with the paint already applied. Has anyone tried the two together, I'd hate to apply and get an adverse reaction as it's taken ages to get this far and another set back will find me reaching for the club hammer!

I would like to replace the trip reset rubber grommet, anyone know of anyone who makes them or an off the shelf (sic) item. It's split and coming out of the housing.

CB350/400 / Master cylinder for cafe racer bars.
« on: August 17, 2019, 10:47:30 AM »
I've fitted some café racer bars/ Laverda type to the 400/4 I'm very slowly turning into a café racer but a thought has just struck me that the master cylinder when / if fitted as is would be at quite an angle and could possibly not have enough brake fluid in it if leaning over too far causing an air lock in the system.
Which prompts a couple of questions:-

Has anyone done this without modifying the master cylinder?
Am I worrying unnecessarily?
Are there special master cylinders for such a set up?
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Ken,
a picture says a thousand words and both sides now installed thanks to your pictures. However I don't see the significance/ purpose of the spring that goes around the rear brake pedal mounting, does it go under the pedal or over it's not quite clear in your photos also I find that when I depress the brake pedal it doesn't spring back/return - I'm guessing a small assembly error on my part. the rear brake spring that fits inside the frame carrying the brake rod is fitted also returns if I lift the pedal up.

Any ideas ? But thanks again for coming to my aid, restored my faith in the forum principle!

CB350/400 / Raask rear sets for 400/4
« on: April 26, 2019, 04:31:51 PM »
I bought a set of these recently from M & P, supposedly for my 400/4 , well that's what the remittance advice note/box and part invoice say. However it's only recently I've had time to fit them and my 14 days to return is up, baring the fact that all the paperwork etc is correct and maybe the wrong bits were in the correctly labelled box, I wonder if I'm doing something wrong and I do have the right bits. No matter how I try I can't get them to fit, do I need extra brackets?

I've attached some photos of the bits assembled in their respective brackets and the frame left and right side if anyone could educate me where they should fit, if i use the former footrest mount no other holes line up with frame bolts etc ,I'd be grateful or have i bought another duff deal!
Needless to say the so called "fitting instructions" were the one piece of paper.
 :-\

Oops it appears my pc rotated the last 2 pics incorrectly.

CB350/400 / Jota ace bars and switchgear wiring dilemma
« on: January 03, 2019, 05:59:52 PM »
At the risk of upsetting the purists I'm making my rebuild into a café racer ish type project . I've fitted jota bars from TEC parts and they appear good quality HOWEVER the original 400/4 switches and associated wiring go through the handlebars and the jota bars are solid  ..hmm! I cant seem to find alternative switches especially for the push/pull throttle mechanism so the only conclusion appears to be drill a hole in the side/bottom of the switch as fits, disassemble the wiring (previous threads on switches duly noted!) and run the wires on the surface somehow once exiting the switch  - unless of course anyone knows better!. It's too late to change my mind as other mods have been already done so don't say don't do it! I know the hole will risk water getting in but perhaps a carefully applied sealant might do the job.

I took off the stays and carefully masked off the chrome edges and sprayed with an underseal -from memory it was called Waxoyl I believe, dried hard and protects too. Reassemble in reverse order 🤣

CB350/400 / starting a rewire
« on: September 25, 2018, 06:19:36 PM »
Anybody used The Ferret for rewiring- have heard he's good but very busy! I want to up rate lights especially and it's a café custom too. Do I get the various components or should I upgrade to more modern systems, I'm not worried/fussed about electronic ignition though! There is no way I could do it myself. I have various old components but unsure as to how to check them, I have bought new coils and a loom though. It all seems a bit daunting 😒

CB350/400 / after market coils
« on: September 10, 2018, 08:27:49 PM »
i'm about to fit the coils to my rebuild but there is something amiss. the original parts listing shows the coils as discontinued so i ordered the after market coils (part no 30501-300-003P) some while ago, now is the time to fit them but there is a problem. the original brackets that fit the coils to the frame have a 5 mm tapped thread hole which the original coils fixed to via a screw. the after market coil will fit the gap in the bracket but the fixing hole is 6 mm  diameter with a 6 mm bolt which wont fit the original fixing bracket - i'm assuming I just drill out the old bracket and retap a thread, also the collar when offered up gives the appearance that there will be insufficient thread for the spring washer and bolt. Any ideas or am i barking up the wrong tree!
