CB750 / Re: Fuel tank cleaning
« on: March 06, 2012, 09:21:12 AM »
Just to relate the story in case it helps others, am having a frustrating time with this tank ( particularly so as it is the only thing stopping me running the motor! ) I checked the garage and found some 'Metal ready' from Frosts which is basically Phosphoric acid, only had a litre so in it went with a few nuts. Agitated said tank periodically during the day and I could see the rust coming off, excellent. Unfortunately, left it too long so that part not under the liquid dried and deposited rusty coating everywhere!  >:(  ( Entirely my fault, instructions say to keep it wet ) Next day much scrubbing with bottle brush and cleaners got me back to where I was ( bottom of tank clean, sides not so ) had to go out, left tank overnight so it went rusty again! Ever heard of WD40 Waggles?!?!?! Got some of the Halfords stuff recommended above ( Hadnt read the post above at that time ) diluted it and chucked it in, left for 2 days, much better AND I remembered to spray the WD40! Still needs another scrub etc but am getting there! Oh and anyone know how to get nuts out of a fuel tank?  ;D

Yes, I have connected the headlamp mount earths and yes I had left the end of the indicator stalks unpainted, what I had also done was paint the headlamp mount too well so the mounting bolt didn't make contact with the bracket  ::)

Getting very close now with my F1 build. Connected up the battery yesterday and surprisingly nearly everything worked! Only problem is with the front indicators which just glow and both come on no matter which side is selected ( rears are fine ) I suspect they are not earthing.

The rears have a small earth wire attached to the mounting but I don't recall anything similar on the front have I missed something? or have I just painted something I shouldn't have?

Have got round to cleaning out the tank on my F1 rebuild. Basically after removing around a bucketful of rusty, petrolly, smelly gunk the inside is not too bad, the usual expected rust along seams ( not enough to leak ) and small rust 'spots' over the sides.

Appreciate the gravel / handful of nuts techniques but that seems a little harsh for this and am not sure that will get at the seams. Anyone had any success with any prioprietory rust removers?

Must admit I would replace brushes anyway if you had it apart and clean commutator. If thats all OK and the bearings are OK (not dry or worn allowing the motor to go out of line) then I would check the relay next

Cant help thinking there would be demand for re engineered calipers, I seem to see a lot of F1 owners in here ..... I for one would prefer I nice new one!

As a matter of interest for bore problems I noticed an ad in this months Classic Motorcycle Mechanics for a firm who seem to specialise in bike brake restoration and can re sleeve cylinders in stainless amongst other things. I have no connection with them and can't recommend them as I haven't used them but it might be worth an enquiry for anyone who is stuck?

They are called 'Past parts ltd' on 01284 750729 ( Suffolk )

Was just looking at the oil lines on my F1, seems sensible to replace anything vaguely rubbery on a 35 year old bike. Noticed these braided ones from HEL that look pretty but I notice they are held on with glorified hose clamps rather than the crimped on originals, presumably I would have to cut off the old crimped fitting? anyone done this? any opinions on whether these lines safe enough? ( I assume the oil pressure is not that high in them? )

Just to complete the story and ensure Motad don't get adverse publicity, returned the pipe and factory phoned me the next day. Apparently, it was a rogue pipe, it was actually a pipe for no 1 cylinder which had been incorrectly stamped with the serial for a No 2! what are the chances? just my luck. Anyway, replacement pipe arrived next day and fits perfectly.

Excellent service from factory and no quibbles despite the fact I bought the system over a year ago

Thanks Bryan,

Yes, the pipes do have serial numbers and I have checked it with the factory and it is the correct one and I am trying to fit it into the correct collector opening ( the only one with a pinch bolt ) so have returned the pipe for checking.

Have to say I was almost tempted to fit 4 pipes from another model as I have always sneakily preferred the sight and sound! 4 into 1s may be a bit more efficient but they always make it look like somethings fallen off the nearside of the bike in my opinion! Not sure if they would fit though ( I know the head fittings differ as do the footrests etc ) so decided to go the easier route. D'oh

OK lack of replies I think tells the story that no one else has had problems, would be very surprised if they had to be honest, points further to a rogue pipe I think.

Factory were very helpful and happy to check it over under warranty so it will be winging its way back shortly

I figure most F1s around now are fitted with Motad 4 into 1s, My F1 rebuild is approaching completion and I have just got around to fitting the Motad but, um, I can't seem to make it fit! The problem is with cylinder 2, the supplied pipe binds against the others and if inserted into the silencer it won't seat in the head and vice versa. I suspect an incorrect pipe may have been supplied and have mailed Motad for advice, just wondered if anyone else had had problems or has any advice, its always on the cards I am doing something dumb! ( I have tried swapping the pipes for cylinders 2 & 3 but thats worse! )

Hi All,

Steve, yes thats more like mine but mine are a bit worse  :( thanks for the thinners tip, will try that.

Re the needle jets, I seem to have mis led a bit ( my fingers and fried brain never work at the same speed  ;D ) the needle jets are NOT blocked, the only reason I am talking of replacing them is coz I am going to use a set of carbs from e-bay hence no idea what model 750 they are from so I need to re jet ( am using these carbs for two reasons, 1. The state of the originals probably means there are some other tiny drillings that are bunged up and 2. I broke one of the float spindle supports  >:( know I could repair it but bearing in mind 1. decided not to bother )

So I have new jets ( main and slow are simple obviously ) will swap the slides in case the cutaway differs, that just leaves the needle jets ..... can use the original needles as they are fine but I have no way of knowing if the actual jet differs between models hence why I am considering replacement. Guess it doesn't matter if I distort the originals getting them out as I have replacements, bit concerned I might distort them fitting them though ....... perhaps I should just use F1 needles and suck it and see?
