Aww, thanks everyone, the bike will be blushing in the garage with all these nice comments! ;D

Didn't win a prize at that show Les, but there were some absolutely stunning bikes there so I wasn't surprised! My other half won best in show with his CB450 Black Bomber, well deserved but very annoying... ;)

TonUp, if I can be of any help with details/photos of any area of the bike let me know. Mine is by no means perfect but she is pretty original.

Thanks Oddjob,

Indeed, I have adjusted the headlight since those photos! ;) All this talking about bikes is making me wish it was spring already so I could go and ride...

Exhaust manufacturers don't seem to realise that there is the demand for parts for these classic Japanese bikes, I've just had to order a set of silencers for my CB77 from Australia! :o

Sorry for the slight thread hijack TonUp... ;)

Hi  Kent,

Is this the type you mean?

I don't have one (sorry if I got your hopes up!) but thought the picture might help people identify it, if this is the one you're after.

Cheers,

Steph.

I'll keep trying but he's not keen! I think for it to be worth it for him they would have to be too expensive to be that popular - mine were made "at cost" for the materials and time, and I don't think people would be willing to pay a lot more than I did. Also last time I spoke to him he said his company are flat out at the moment just with British bike exhausts, but if things get quieter maybe I'll be able to convince him to make a few sets as a trial.

Thanks :)

I bought the bike from Charlie at Oxford Classic Honda, it was in tatty original condition at that point having been sat in someone's garage for a few years awaiting restoration, and I've just done bits and pieces to it over the last couple of years (lots of polishing, new rims and spokes, etc). The big issue was the exhaust, there was a big dent in one of the original downpipes and the silencer was starting to rust out inside. Luckily I managed to talk a friend (and owner of a classic motorcycle exhaust manufacturing company) into making a one-off exact replica of the original downpipes and silencers for me in stainless steel.... Not cheap (at all) but worth every penny in my opinion. I'm still trying to talk him into making and selling them...

Here she is showing off her 'good side':

...too big a bike for a beginner

That's what I tried to tell myself a couple of years ago when I saw a 550F2 for sale, went to have a look at it and could only just get it on the centre stand after about 5 attempts...but fell completely in love with it.

Sometimes I'm glad I don't listen to my sensible side! ;) The 550F really is a lovely bike and there aren't enough of them around. Glad to see another one has found a good new home :) Good luck with it and there are lots of great people on here who will help you along the way.

Sounds great Neal, I'll have a read soon! :D My CB77 is on the road now by the way, so we'll have to catch up for a cup of tea soon..

Iain, I was at the Haynes museum show too with my CB550F2 - I may have spoken to you, I remember someone mentioning a Kawasaki Zephyr... It was a great show, definitely on the list for next year if they hold it again.

As Les says, the engine and frame numbers will confirm it. It could be the same situation as my CB550 F2, which was manufactured in 1977 but not registered until the same date as yours, Nov 1978.

Cheers,

Steph.

Hi Branston,

I didn't realise there were so many of us Honda Four addicts in the area! I'm in Ringwood so not far from you either, I have a 550F2 and would definitely be up for a local meet somewhere once Summer arrives :D

Hi Sherlock,

I'm in Ringwood, just down the road from you! I have a stock 1978 CB550F2. It would be interesting to put the two next to each other when yours is finished. Looks like a great project.

Good luck with the build! :)

Thanks again for all your help.

Bryanj, you were right, the reserve part of the tap was blocked. All sorted now and running sweetly again ;D after having also decided to pour oil all over the garage floor that is...! (fortunately just a seal gone!)

Now back on the road, hoping I can enjoy a bit more riding before winter really sets in...

Tried running it on reserve and had the same problem. It took about £10 of premium unleaded (about £1.59 a litre :o)

Thanks for the replies,

It is looking very much like a fuel starvation problem. I have since filled the tank completely and the bike's done 80 miles without missing a beat...!

The vent in the filler cap is fine, I'll have a look at the filter when I get a chance.

Cheers :)

Hi all,

I've also posted this on the US forum so apologies if you've already seen it there.

Went out for a nice evening's ride on my CB550F yesterday, and broke down no less than 4 times on the way home!! I'm just about to start investigating the problem and wondered whether any of you guys would be able to shed any light on it...

The bike hasn't been out a lot recently, has been sitting in the garage and run occasionally. Got her out on Tuesday, filled her up with petrol and went for around a 15 mile ride. No issues at all. Then on Friday went for a 50 mile ride and the bike didn't miss a beat. Yesterday, rode for 5 miles with no problems, and stopped off at a pub.

After that, things started going wrong. Left the pub, got around 2 miles down the road and started losing power. Then she stopped completely, and I pulled over. At this point I realised I'd been an idiot and forgotten to turn the fuel on when leaving the pub, so turned it on and tried to start the bike. Strangely, she didn't start after several attempts... I wheeled her over to a safer spot, sat and contemplated for a bit then tried again, and she started immediately. I rode on, thinking "that's a bit strange" but she seemed to be behaving herself. However, another two miles down the road I started losing power again, losing one cylinder at a time. It would pick up if I opened the throttle fairly sharply, but got progressively worse, then stopped. This time the fuel was definitely on. Pulled over, tried to start, no joy. Fiddled with things, tried switching the fuel onto reserve, made no difference. Waited a few minutes, and she started normally.

Another two miles down the road, repeated the same process. And then again just before I got home!

It's not a battery issue because the electric start is turning over perfectly. Trying to kick start her makes no difference.

Has anyone had anything like this before? Just about to go and break down again then see if there's a spark or not...

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Thanks,

Steph.
