A bit more done, making the most of some time off over christmas.
Welded up the subframe loop and added some triangular gussets beneath it just to finish off the line of the frame so it doesn't stop abruptly.
I'll leave the dressing up of the welds till I've got the engine out of the frame so it's a bit easier to do.
I take my hat off to any one who is good at welding because I am not,I can turn my hand to most things but I admit I struggled a bit with this.
I suppose it will get easier the more I do as this was my first time.

Next job is getting seat pan sitting right and sort out the fixings for it.

Yes.I'm doing exactly the same.
I've spoken to a mot station and you do not require indicators but you do require the other lights unless it's on a day mot.

CB500/550 / Steering

A couple of questions for you knowledgeable chaps. :)

I've noticed on the parts list there are a left and right spacer that should be fitted to the top yoke. They are between the pinch gap that holds the fork in place.
Are these critical as the're missing from mine? Will a stainless washer(what thickness)be ok or should I use something else.

The second question I've partially answered by reading a thread in the 400 section.I've seen this is supposed to be a steering lock but would iy have been originally keyed a like to the ignition(i know you can't now).Although it's a fairly simple bike by design without an owners manual or any paperwork it's pain knowing it had a steering lock or any other features. ???

I've managed to get a couple of small jobs done over the christmas break.
I mocked up the front end, bars, clocks and grips just to see if it was the look I was after.

Stripped the paint on the top yoke, removed the worse casting flaws and polished it.

I had the switch apart yesterday and someone has made a right meal of it.
The top part has been araldited on and the contact is missing and the selector spring and stud are missing from the light lever.

CB500/550 / Avoid using LMC Spares/Raw power motorcycles.
« on: December 24, 2012, 02:19:26 PM »
I'm not one for righting about poor service on forums but I do praise good service but I would avoid LMC spares like the plague.

Having ordered a marshall deeptone exhaust from them on 17th Nov at £300 I have still not received it.
Web site says allow 14 working days which I did and I then phoned them when that came and went to be told it will arrive between 12-14 dec.
Phoned again on 15th assured by the manager it will be with me by Fri 21st December and guess what still sitting here 24th with no exhaust.

I am realistic, things don't always go as smooth as as they should but at no time have they bothered to contact me by either email or phone to let me know the progress of the order.Had they done this I would be a bit more ok with it,but they haven't

As I payed through paypal I've raised a complaint and tried phoning LMC today but there closed for christmas.

I popped round Rob's today and had a look at the paint while I was there and have to say it's a top job.

Mirror finish and no orange peel.I was going to use him to do my paint but it's just confirmed the decision.

CB500/550 / Right hand switch gear
« on: December 13, 2012, 09:01:22 PM »
I'm trying to find a way of keeping the original ally right hand switch gear rather than change it for a plastic one.

The problem is I'm missing the front plastic knob and the top rotary dial is in terrible state.
Although the top is seized I should be able to free that once it's off the bars.
Is there any sources you know of that can help me out with a repair or spares?
I see on ebay theres loads of plastic ones that look the same but or for small cc models,I was wondering how interchangable they where or even if I could strip a new one for spare.

Yes I recon the carbs took me a good couple of weekends to do.

Yes the pictures where in the kitchen but that's only cause the lighting is good in there.

The brass caps are actually very polished it just doesn't really show in the pictures.
The only reason I've changed the clocks are because they are in such a bad state. They may be salvagable if you could find spares but it's unlikely plus there in kpm although I know you can get round that.

I've had another box of bits arrive tonight.

Time for an update :)

Things have been going a bit slow because work has been hectic.
The carbs have now been sorted ,ultrasonically cleaned and serviced by my mechanic and then back to me for the cosmetic bits.
There was only so much i could do to them because of the state they where in.
All the rusty steel bits have been cleaned and sprayed, the carb bodies have been dremeled with a wire head. The carb mounting plate has been vapour blasted and I've given it a couple of coats of lacquer. Most of the nuts and bolts have been changed to stainless.
This is the finished result,it won't win any concourse shows but I'm pleased with the results compared to how they where when I removed them.

I'm still waiting on my exhaust which should have been here today but it now looks like the 14th >:(
On the plus side I've had 2 new clocks and a bracket arrive from dime city cycles in the states, very nice quality as well.

Thats about it so far, need to get the carbs back on now to see if it runs.

Yeah you're right, I should definitely be more patient and save for the correct tools.

Since the last update I took to taking apart my carbs. These came from the crash bike and I have no idea whether they it was a 550K or 550F. Does this make any difference? The carbs were badly oxidised inside, the brass isn't too bad but the jets were clogged. A little bit of rust in the bottom of the bowls too, but that was easy enough to scrub out with a bit of carb cleaner. I boiled the bodies for a couple of hours in lemon juice, vinegar and water to great results, any brass that didn't have rubber involved was also boiled with the bodies. Some cleaned up but others have debris in that I can't shift. I don't have access to an air compressor in the area but have read about using a softer metal to try and move any dirt in the jets, copper wire maybe. It's really not something I want to do so may just end up buying a rebuild kit. the only one I can find is from DCC which, of course, involved US shipping costs. I deem it well worthwhile to pay for it, but if anyone is after anything from them and can't justify the shipping, it may be an option to chip in on the same order...? Just a suggestion...

Looks right, anyone got any insight?

I don't know if this is any help but I've just had my carbs sorted. As I've never worked on the internals before I gave them to my trusted mechanic. He had to ultrasonically clean them 5 times just to get them apart,he said they where the worst he had ever seen.He then soaked them in used oil over night and then cleaned and stripped.
The emulsion tubes where rotten apparently,we used the service kit from davidsilver. He was impressed with the kit because he said normally you don't get half the bits in them.
Just finishing off the rusty cosmetic parts and then there done and back together.

Well I got them all apart ok ;D
In one of the arms there is 3mm pin that is pressed in at the factory to stop the main rod moving laterally,I drilled it out and it came apart a treat.I'll replace it with a dog point grub screw once all the paint has hardened properly.
Sounds a bit overkill but they really where in a bad way,I'll post some pics in my build thread at the end of the week when there re assembled.
