Hello all. I'm currently messing about with a cb550 f1 in the depth of the garage and thinking of making a cafe racer. I've been looking at pictures online of other projects and getting some great ideas for my project but I,m not sure how the MOT process will limit my build. I would like to remove all the indicators front and rear just leaving headlight and rear light with brake light. Would this pass an MOT and is it road legal?

Hi. Yes finally got the correct part from western hills honda USA. Cost me about £80 for the part and shipping but it was the only one i could find. Engine back together now and ready to go into the frame. Thanks for your help.

currently rebuilding a cb550 f1 engine and got the the stage of replacing the barrells today. I don't have a set of piston ring clamps small enough for these pistons and didn't want to wait a few days while i ordered some so i set about making some from a bit of plastic. I cut up an old ice cream container into strips which wrapped around the piston rings and then used a cable tie to secure it in place. So simple so cheap and worked a treat. Thought i'd share it as it may help someone else out one day.

if you have a paint code then halfords will do a paint match either spray or touch up pen. I've used a spray can and had a very good match.

The leg is in the slot. I just had the ratchet 180 degrees out. all working fine now.

Don't panic i,ve sorted the problem. Got the kick start ratchet 180 deg out. Thankfully i could dismantle and reasemble from the bottom without splitting the cases.

Hi. I've just but the bottom end crank cases back together all bolted up, selector shaft is in and now trying that all gears select correctly before I carry on. As I turn the main shaft by hand in the correct direction I hear the kickstart ratchet. In the other direction the main shaft is locked. What have I done wrong?

I've had a quick look online today and couldn't find any but I'll have a more indepth search one evening this week. Havn't had much time this last week so only just got round to using plastigauge on journals today. Had about .06 clearence and max is .08 so it's getting close.

Finally found the stamped letters on the crankcase and the numbers on the crank. It would appear they are all marked as A1 which i think relates to shell D YELLOW. Does this sound correct? On the plus side it seems to be the cheaper shell but on the down side its not in stock with cmsnl.

when you get sent your tax reminder you have a reference number which is what i used to sorn a bike last week but seen as the bike hasn't been on the road for 30 years i guess he hasn't had a reminder. Probably best give dvla a call on monday not that they will be very helpfull!!

I have now ordered what i hope is the correct bearing from western hills honda usa which they say will take 6-8 days for delivery (last one in stock). When i phoned to order the part i confirmed with the parts guy that the o/d was 57mm which is what i need. It would seem that cmsnl have the correct part number listed but no stock. i'll upload a couple of pics to show the bearing i got from cmsnl 52mm o/d (the wrong one) , and the old bearing i took out 57mm o/d. also a pic to show the size of the casing where the bearing fits. Hope this will help someone in the future when ordering this bearing.

Outside diameter is 52 I think and I need 57.

How excited was I today when I got home to find a packet had arrived. I rushed to the garage ripping the packet open and looking forward to the start of my engine rebuild. How disappointed was I when I compared the bearings to find they are different sizes. Oh well the saga continues!!!!

I'll have a look this evening for and numbers on the bearing. I think the one behind the clutch is a slightly different size but I'll have a measure.

well that was confusing. I've finally ordered a part from cmsnl and i hope it's the correct part but i'm still not totally sure what i've ordered. Thank you to everyone who has helped with this topic and hopefully i'll soon be starting the rebuild.
