South Worcestershire, so close to Gloucestershire, it might as well be in it ::)

CB750 / Re: Relationship between Timing & tappets
« on: April 07, 2010, 08:03:51 PM »
Adjusting the timing can have no affect whatsover on the tappets, but altering it can make different mechanical noises appear and dissapear, check the exhaust gaskets are not blowing at the head as that can sound very much like a tappet

I wonder......in my last, re. the abortive re-fit of the exhaust, I noted & "fessed up" to the fact that one of the Motad pipes had split around the lip cum flange where it fits against the head.

I've had a 'calm' listen, tonight.......I'm wondering now if it could be coming from there.  It really is the most peculiar.....& alarming, to be honest 'noise'.  That's what made me think it wasn't tappets, it's like a szzzuzzing & a tap ??? ::) :-[.  If it was likely to be a commonly found issue, I'd get a sound file & 'post' it, but it's obviously something obscure ! so there isn't much point.

I may just hold fire & see what happens when I fit the OEM system.

CB750 / Relationship between Timing & tappets

Ok - I'm going to preface this with an embarrassment warning.  I'm not an engineer, I do my best, I get by, but a lot of the time it's luck.  I have '0' mechanical "instinct".

My CB750 F1, 33,000 miles runs like a 'clock'.....which is an unfortunate analogy, because it has developed a "tick", in the last few days or, more to the point a click.....click, click & a whirring sloosh ??? ::)

It sounds, as best I can tell "top end"....but it doesn't sound unduly 'tappety'.....& it is the click/ticking which has attracted my ear ( I mean lets face it, it's a pretty noisy engine even when "pefect") so the slooshing, may be normal "top end" noise.

The only thing I have done to what was an otherwise sweet running, non-ticking, bike, is add the Dyna S electronic ignition & time it to perfection with a strobe light.

The question is, if the timing was slightly out before the Dyna S was fitted & the tappets set to run on a slightly "out" timing, is the fitting of the perfectly adjusted ignition likely to have induced the tappets being 'out' ?

I have double checked the fitting of the Dyna S - nothing is "catching", it does speed up with engine revs but gets pretty much "lost" in the engine noise at higher revs, on the stand or rolling & is most obvious when at low revs, low speed or static.  It's there when the engine is warm or cold ? & doesn't seem to get better or worse.  Sometimes it seems imperceptible & then like a spanner in a tin can.

The bike is running with good power, carbs have just been set/balanced ( since the ticking started ) & touch wood nothing horrible has happened.

Any suggestions.......

RS paints do a non-hazardous 2K rattle can of clear lacquer, which is, in my experience petrol 'proof' as opposed to resistant.  It isn't cheap......but it's very handy.  I don't understand the 'science' behind a 2-pack paint being in a can & not "going-off" but it doesn't.

In my experience it is 'many' times better than the 'High Street' petrol-resistant lacquer, which I have found to be very 'thick' in application & not to actually do what it says on the 'can'.

The RS lacquer is not however, resistant to the blown-back 'mist' from a leaking front brake piston seal  :-[

No need to ask how I know ::)

Pete

Well.....given that they're in short supply.....I probably would  ::) :o :-[

But given that I'd already got the maiden bid in ! I'm hoping I won't have to !! ;).............

now....what were we talking about ??? ??? ???

I think it explains ?
Some horror stories about it 'cooking itself' instantly if wired up wrong & lots of comment about keeping the optical elements clean ?

It looks, like with the Dyna S, as if you keep the advance plate, behind the Martek, & then plug it into that ?  The fact that the lug on the Martek is locked into the advance retard, means the timing points are "fixed" ?.....as far as I can see ??
When the two marks line up, it should be bang on.

There's loads to Google on them, quite a few references on the US SOHC Club ? but not all good.  There seemed to be a propensity for them to just die.

SSSHhhhhhhhhh....... don't go telling everybody !!!!!!!!! :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X

Must admit, hadn't suggested a B.I.N. to him, thought I'd just see how things panned out.......but now......everybody knows that (a) they're like Hens Teeth......& (b) what the listing number is  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ;)

Cheers Bryan.....I'm hoping the ones I have an eye on, on Ebay will come in at a 'good' price.  One of those things you either want, or don't & not the sort of part people are inclined to 'lay up'.  Having to be patient, is the problem........ ::)

The NOS  F1 exhaust bracket arrived today, in it's parts bag with it's Honda parts label etc, & it is, as described, in 'as new' condition, so that's a +.

Not that the rest of the bike is !!.....but it's a "user" ;D & not bad for all that.

Cheers Bryan....no....definitely no gaskets - very surprised because the re-build was done by a Honda mechanic, but in all fairness, it may well not have been him who put the Motad on.

The split collets is what I'm after....but the 'correct' ones are effectively two layers, one atop the other ?

I''ll try that site - I found some listed at a Liverpool supplier, but when I rang they'd only got three....if any, as they we'rent sure their stock lists were up to date.

« on: March 30, 2010, 02:30:18 PM »
I'm coming out of hibernation....& thinking about going back in, given the turn in the weather  ::)

Last week the urge took me to take off the Motad system from the F1 & put the original exhaust back on.  I made the incorrect assumption that the Motad would be rigged with the original exhaust collets.  It wasn't - as anyone with a Motad will know, they appear to come as part of their system.  The first "gremlin" I encountered was that there were no ring gaskets in place.  Now this probably shouldn't have been an issue, barring the escape of a bit of 'gas' - but.....it was, because one of the ends of the pipes, where they are bent over had split around about 75 % of the dia. of pipe #3  I think it was the stress of being stretched & not cushioned by a gasket as there are no signs of any corrosion.

Gremlin #'s 2 & 3 - get the Motad system off, offer up the "original" & discover (i) I now have no collets & (ii) the bracket on the Motad doesn't fit the OEM silencer :-[

So.....Motad back on - with some c/h port gaskets this time & start looking for an F1 exhaust bracket & some collets.  I found a NOS bracket on Ebay on a reasonable'ish BIN, so that's on its way, but the collars are proving a bit more difficult.  Silvers are 'out of stock' & the "proper" ones have a double shoulder, presumably to spread the weight of clamping the pipes in ?  My lads CB125 ones are the same length & dia. but they have a 'single' shoulder.  CMS.Nl appear to have them for not too much money - question is.......what is everbody else using ?? Is it a case of "making do" with single shouldered collars/collets or working & looking a bit harder to find some double shouldered ones ?

There are some 'used' ones on Ebay in the States.....fair looking condition & even with postage if they don't get too much interest, they may come at a reasonable price.   If there are better Uk sources though, I'd like to get them before the weekend ! ;)

May help explain what you have.....stock wiring is pretty simple at the "points" end, because it comes with your Dyna S ? ie one yellow, one blue & one red.  Just need to know what the wires at your coils look like ?

I've just fitted a full Dyna S set up to my F1, if I can help, I will.  Probably be good to know what wires you see that aren't 'stock' ?

I've got a CB1 - American version.......apparently it's 55.2HP......but I'm guessing you don't mean this version of the 'popular mid-size engine'  ;D ;D ;D

It goes fast, fast.... :o
