These guys have been recommended to me by several people, they don't list the 550 but they don't list a Scimitar either and they do pistons for them so they may be worth a call http://www.ssbrakepistons.com/

CB500/550 / Re: Fuse ratings - continuous OR blow ?

Cheers, it's good to have confirmation that I've fitted the right ones. Now I just need to remove the scotchlocks and the wiring should be sorted.

I'm told that the general rule of thumb on British cars is glass fuses are labelled at their continuous rating and blade fuses at their bow rating, but I'm not sure if it's correct or if the fuses in Japanese bikes follow the same rule.

I've ordered a mixed pack of fuses from ebay, hopefully they'll just have one rating on them so the choice will be easy.

CB500/550 / Fuse ratings - continuous OR blow ?
« on: March 18, 2010, 07:52:56 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone know if the fuse ratings are for continuous or to blow ? The spares I have are labeled for both e.g. 8A continuous 15A blow, 17A cont 35A blow etc.
I've discovered that all of my fuses are the wrong ratings including a household 13A where there should be a 7A.

Cheers

The alarmed padlock I bough doesn't fit through the disk so it's being used with a short chain. Hopefully this will be adequate for this area as it's parked outside, but it is next to a much more valuable bike.

There's a guy on another forum (Scimitar owners club) that's bought a milling machine and is offering to do cheap 1 off work to recoup the cost. If the consensus is that it's a worthwhile mod and greater than manual accuracy is required then I can ask him for a price. I think new disks were on offer at cmsnl as well.

He's done a very tidy job of fitting a 3L 24v Omega engine to his Scimitar.

I'm doing pretty much the same with the same model bought in January, but to be honest it sounds like I'm aiming for a lower standard ;D
I'm aiming/hoping to simply get it usable and on the road this year replacing little more than service items, then when I've got to know it better I'll take on other stuff. Once it's in use I may get my finger out and tidy up my rough Z50 copy.

I had a couple of rides round the block troubleshooting a problem, it's not ready to go much further yet.

I've just had it out for a test ride and it still wont rev  >:(

The fuel flow looked good when I removed the pipe. I'm still running on reserve though as I don't want to fill the tank until I've got a new strainer for the tap.
No fuel filter is fitted (yet).
Cap breather is clear.
Carb rubbers look fine.
I forgot to check the exhaust so I'll have to go back to that.
Points gap and static timing are both spot on.
I'm yet to try the strobe, maybe it's not advancing???
The oil warning light switch is faulty, doesn't earth even when not running. Oil did reach the head when tested.

After adding another 5L of petrol I can now coax it up to 7,000rpm. I can also now clearly feel that anything over 1/4 throttle causes the bogging, it looks like I'm going to have to take the carbs off to clean the mains and emulsion tubes and set the float heights.

I'm just aiming to put off the opportunist really, I doubt anyone would make a serious attempt to nick any of my bikes as they're all worth less than a grand.

I've got a cheap alarm, alarmed padlock and short chain on order now. It's all a bit wasted at the min though as I can't get it running right to take it anywhere.

I've seen brightly coloured alarmed padlock's so I could try to use one of them through the large disk holes.
You've just reminded me that I also need to source a grab rail.
I plan to make my own alarm using a tilt switch but I may be tempted by a cheap one.

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a disk lock that will fit a 550, or any other easy to carry on the bike security device?
On my other bikes I use a Xena disk lock alarm but it doesn't even come close to fitting. I've got the garage sorted with ground anchors, alarms, extra door bolts etc, this is just for parking at work.

I'm in the process of cleaning out the powdercoat from the steering lock but since the seat lock has been forced I'm not confident that the key I have will fit. I also have a tilt switch to make a DIY alarm, and yes I'm a bit paranoid.

Cheers

I've filled in loads of these petitions I'm I'm yet to see a positive response. At least we'll get the opportunity to vote them out shortly, but then again are the alternatives any better ???

The cover on mine has 2 allen key bolts and two normal hex headed bolts. I'm going to try and buy a box spanner or/or thinwall socket at lunchtime to shift the problem one, if they don't fit I might have to drill the head off.

If it's 6mm hose then think I have a spare filter lying around that I could use. I'd like to also replace the strainer in the tank to try and keep the grime out of the tap.
I certainly don't want to frequently remove the carbs, I had a right battle with them to get them back on last time.

The road tax arrived today so at least testing it wont be a problem  ;D

It's a 550.

Cheers

Allan

EDIT - The bolt is now out, had to grind a box spanner down to paper thin walls.
