CB350/400 / Re: New cam chain tensioner or not?

Thanks Trigger,

Somewhere in the last 10 or so owners it was either abused or neglected then repaired. This is certainly not a well cared for, one owner bike. Hopefully it will feel like one when I get it all back together, albeit with some genuine 'patina' visible.

Hmmm 21 x 400's, eh? This is my first 400 and my first ever engine that involved bottom end stuff. Learning loads and spending too much time in my garage. Great fun in the man shed!

Cheers, D.

Thank you all, sound advice as always from people who've been there. You may have just saved me a few bob, not least as this little 400 will be looking forward to a long, dry, easy retirement... if and when I get her running again. This'll not be a daily winter commuter in my ownership!

Cheers for now,

D.

CB350/400 / New cam chain tensioner or not?
« on: August 03, 2014, 07:49:53 PM »
Hello all,

CB400/4 - having shelled out (if you'll pardon the pun) for new crankcase bearings, ground-in my valves, etc. I'm considering replacing all of the cam chain tensioner parts. I read all sorts of stuff about how bad or neglected they were and, having seen lots of evidence of previous engine failures/rebuilds, I'm thinking that, as the engine is out and dismantled, I should play safe and order a whole load of new parts rather than risk reusing stuff.

Any views out there (I'm sure there are lots!). Replace all of the bits or just a few? If so, which ones?

Cheers and thank you, D.

Hi again all,

Thank you for your kind attention and in one case parts en-route.

Hope I can reciprocate with something to someone some day!

Cheers,

D.

CB350/400 / Pilot case screws
« on: July 26, 2014, 12:31:42 PM »
Hi all,

Does anyone have (or know what suitable alternatives might exist for) the three screws that hold together the two halves of the pilot case, please?

My old one had two broken brackets and a bit of tape holding it together! My nice shiny new one from David Silver doesn't include the screws, sadly.

Thank you,

D.

Thank you all again (and especially for nearly starting a trading sub-thread!).... hmmm, 'thread'; seems appropriate for these discussions!

Oddjob, I'll come back to you when I've properly scoped out my requirements.

Cheers, D.

Ah, thus speaks the voice of experience, eh?

Thank you all.

I failed to mention that many of my old bits have been bashed, lost threads, lost screw heads, etc. and so not worth re-plating. I'll check out the suppliers mentioned and also consider other trade fairs, jumbles, etc.

I'll have quite a few such items in my old jam jars, but you can guarantee I won't have a full set of any of them!

Cheers,

D.

Hello all,

I'd like to get hold of a box of nice clean shiny new washers, bolts, set screws, etc. All the kind of stuff that fits (or can be made to fit) every Jap bike ever made.

Does anyone know of a good supplier of such stuff? I'm sure that'd be cheaper than seeking out 'spares' and will do the job just as well. In the meantime, I'm wire brushing every single washer I have removed from the bike... along with most of the skin off my fingers!

Ta all,

D.

Heartwarming stuff Davy,

I reckon I'm about 3 months behind you... lots of cleaned and vapour blasted bits back home and a room full of new spares to start putting it all back together. With a following wind I might have it done and reported on this site (hopefully as a runner) by, er, winter!!!

Cheers, D.

Thank you for your interest in my painter contact.

His name is Charlie Seward, based in Somerton - 07736 970991.

In terms of price: how does £750 sound, INCLUDING my frame, swing arm, stands, etc... all dipped and finished in black two pack (sorry, but I don't like powder coat finishes on classic bikes)?

Almost forgot to mention, he also fabricated a frame bracket for me which, let's face it, is stock-in-trade type work for anyone repairing classic car bodies.

Enjoy!

Hi all and thank you for your words of comfort.

I've done some top-end work and general repairs but it's the bottom-end that gives me concern. That said, armed with your support and answers to as yet unasked questions, I'm sure that I can get this old girl runmning again. She's run pretty sweetly for the past three years but losing oil from all quarters and covered in (40) years of grime.

As the photos below attest, I'm past the cleaning stage (thanks to Griff's Reality Motor Works' vapour skills and a brilliant young painter who specialises in classic Aston Martins(!) at Somerset/start-up/artisan rates... anyone interested, let me know).

I'll upload more stuff as I progress.

Cheers,

D.

Hi all,

Now that I have a big pile of cleaned and new parts, I'm wondering if I have bitten off more than I can chew.

Originally, I was thinking about putting it all back together, but talk on this forum of new bearings, plastiguage, etc. makes me wonder if my hand needs holding by someone who's done it before.

Can you recommend anyone who can help me? I don't want to ship all my parts to a workshop and then pick up a shiny completed unit. Much of the fun is doing it ones-self and learning in the process (as pretty much everyone on this forum will understand). That said, I don't want to make some elementary mistake that ruins the whole thing for lack of half an ounce of experience!

Views/suggestions (for Bristol/North Somerset area) much appreciated.

Cheers, D.

Thanks all.

Bullet bitten and savings started.

You're all correct... the thought of stripping it all down again after rebuilding it, don't appeal much!

Cheers, D.
