I saw the two keys when trying to disassemble it,is that all thats holding it together?

CB500/550 / Carb disasembly advice
« on: November 28, 2012, 05:33:22 PM »
I've had the carb cleaned and rebuilt so I'm now just tidying up there cosmetics.

I'm having troubvle with the bar that connects all 4 carbs and has the mount that the cables go to,I can't remove it.
I've removed the pinch bolts on either end and the 2 bolts that support the cable mount in the middle but it won't budge.
The only thing that is holding it now is the 2 cast leg supports which i presume have some sort of bearing in them.

I've had a look at the pdf manual but it doesn't mention that.Any suggestions or point me in the right direction?

Thanks for the reply,
I won't actually be fitting the exhaust for at least 6 months but I need it to make sure everything is in place before the frame gets powder coated. As you say the last thing I want to do is find yjeres a support missing after that's been done.

Thanks for the reply but I think a custom made is going to be to expensive.

Has any one had any dealings with either the MAC 4-1 or the Marshall 4-1 deeptone?
Thought they both looked ok for chrome, just wondered about fit and finish.

CB500/550 / I can't find an exhaust
« on: November 10, 2012, 06:07:19 PM »
Evening chaps.
As the cafe project toodles along I've started to mess with the frame so I now have to decide on what exhaust I need.
I really only want to fit a stainless 4-1 system but the problem is finding one. After spending hours looking I've only found 2 and there both in the US.
I had decided on a Yoshi replica from Lossa Engineering which I was going to order today but in there ultimate wisdom there now only steel not stainless.
The other gut I found in the US won't import to the UK.

Can anyone help?

CB500/550 / Front master cylinder repair.
« on: October 20, 2012, 05:35:45 PM »
Just been trying to repair my master cylinder but have a bit of an issue.
After spending 1.5 hours trying to get a rusted circlip out I've managed to dessemble ,clean and reassemble my master cylinder it now it is leaking.

My question is this.I have a clymer manual which I'm using and this shows that the primary and secondary cap should be between the spring and piston.
But on the one I've removed the secondary cup is fitted to the piston.

Is the clymer manual wrong as that how I fitted it?

                     Cheers Mitch

yes, this is a bit of a bone of contention.
The bike was registered as built in 72 in the US so I presumed it was a K1 but i have been told by chaps on here it is a K2.
Have a look here and you'll see http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,4793.msg22158/topicseen.html#new

Morning, recently joined the forum and I thought I start a thread on my project I;ve just started. :)

CB500 1972 K2 purchased just over 3 weeks ago with the intention of doing a cafe racer build.Unfortunately the bike was in worse condition than I hoped so now its a ground up build rather than a tart up.

First job is to make sure it runs before I take the engine out of the frame.I'm going to have a compression/leak down check done to see the the state of play and then I'll do an oil change if hasn't got to come apart, then clean the carbs.

Carbs off ready for ultrasonic cleaning/servicing.

Ordered my new battery, oil filters, carb servicing kits, master cylinder service kit as that seized solid.
This is state of play as of last night. It will stay like this now until I get the engine checked and carbs cleaned and back together to see if she fires.

Just for comical value, the pile of rust after the strip down :o

The number stamped into the headstock on mine is on the right side as you sit on it as is the 2 rivet holes for the plate.
I've marked the rivets holes with some red paint to make them clearer.

I've been all over the bike and there are no other plates(apart from the subframe) or signs that there ever has been including the positions that you've shown to check.
Shes down to just a rolling chassis with the engine in so I can see all the frame.

Theres only 2 plates on the bike that I can see.
The first is this one that I mentioned earlier, that was taped under the seat.I would say that is the one for the headstock because the fixing holes line up and if it was any bigger it would cover the frame number.

The second is on the rear subframe on the right hand side.

Thanks for clearing that up,always helps to now what you own. ::)
I'm presuming this the plate you refer to DGM15745OM.It was on the head stock it was stuck under the seat as the fixings had rusted through. :'(

The fact that its tax exempt was one of the reasons I purchased this particular bike, the V5 says the taxation class is historic

I've finally got a weekend free so in to the garage to give her some attention.
