CB500/550 / Engine assembly question
« on: October 02, 2015, 10:00:30 PM »
Hello, after about 2 years i managed to put engine back together.
Thank you very much as I wouldn't be able to do it without help from this forum.

I'm looking thru manual now, trying to figure out last bits, i just had a thought that I fitted valve oil control no3 upside down, is it even possible?
Can someone kindly confirm that it only fits one way round? Cylinder block fit in without any trouble, so I think i did it the right way round...

Thanks!

Don't be in a rush at it takes time to find the correct piece of cast iron pipe to make the liner from and he can do it with the complete wheel, just take tyre off!

If he still does them

Matthew, you wouldn't have contact details to that chap who does replace drum liners, Iim in need of liner replacement...
Cheers

Be carefull of just buying morris minor drums, I eagerly stripped one in a scrappers only to find it was several inches too small, luckily before buying but after wasting my time removing a mangled wheel which wasn't willing to come easily. Classic mini do fit - again beware in case sizes vary accross the years. It is a moderately time consuming job depending on how your lathe copes etc. I took long enough to think that the chap in Huddersfield who does the job for £40 or so is welcome to do it for others I will still do my own though.

Humour / Re: illegal

As an immigrant myself, from Poland 14 years in UK, I find this joke funny as hell.
It's also sad to know how much truth there is in it.
I have just been offered job which pays less per day then I was getting as a labour working ehmm not quite legally in 2001...

This year sucks a specialty in my mind, last deep coal mine is being closed (I come from south of Poland where coal mines were biggest employer, also my father worked in coal mine) also just heard that Tee side is losing another steel works.
Apparently economy is on the mend, I don't think so.

Sorry for hijacking thread, needed to let some steam off...

CB500/550 / Drum brake question
« on: September 28, 2015, 11:30:59 PM »
Hello everyone, it's been awhile since I was active on the forum, still read it often but not much time to work on my CB550.
Today, i was cleaning my drum brake and came across rather worrying crack in the drum, should I be worried? There was fair amount of damage from water standing in and patches where obviously brake pads didn't touch the lining, I decided to clean it up with 400 grade sandpaper followed by generous amount of brake cleaner. I know that best way would be good old lathe treatment, still that crack worries me a bit.

Any thoughts?

I was lucky enough to be in Japan few weeks ago, while walking around sleepy fishing village Onjuku in Chiba, came across this beauties.
Like them a lot, have a soft spot for small four strokes.

Never seen 50cc CB before, shame didn't have more time to take better pictures.

CB500/550 / Re: CB550 HID headlamp conversion

My 500 has been with me since 1980 and always had the 55/60 Watts halogen. The Philips X-treme vision or Motovision is stunningly good and leaves nothing to be desired. If you're really worried about charging (you shouldn't) you could choose the Philips Ecovision that has the performance of a very good 55/60 Watts halogen but draws 20% less. Philips always came out best in tests. Recommended.
Thanks for info, I wonder if you have original head lamp?

Good luck with finding a shop to do it...  I had one and they kept the parts for 8 months and fucked it up, I found another one, very nice Old Boy,  think I might get it done before Xmas...
Happy to give you number only if you are ready to wait 6months. Can't believe that people can offer such a bad services and still expecting getting paid... Go and find proper shop up north where folks know what they do and do it well.

Hello everyone, very interesting subject.
Petersy could you kindly take a picture of the fairing on your bike, would love to see it, also, does it work for you, i'm 6" and not sure if it would for me, and do you have standard handlebars?

Thanks

Petersy - where did you get yours from? It looks the part and is for a 7" headlamp.

I got mine here....

Got pistons yesterday, excellent quick service, this baby's came all the way from japan, were packed well, and are looking good.
Another step forward to having bike in order and on the road.

Correct, I'm going to re bore with pistons which are fingers crossed on the way.
My current build is kind of rough, my main objective is to have bike running asap, mind you it has been well over a year...

Will do. I take it it is non urgent, if you are going the re bore route on what you have on this engine?
