Ok - one more question chaps

Is it ok to use a connecting link with a split link as opposed to the riveted type on something like a 525vx D.I.D Chain?

Thanks again for all of the very helpful info on this.

Oddjob

Thats amazing info you've given there - thanks

Think i will add a 525VX DID to the shopping list.

If i need to remove any links is this easy to do (with a proper link remover of course) with regard to the x-peened rivets?

I've done plenty of pedal cycle chains but never a motorcycle.

Thanks for all replies chaps

Thanks for the reply Les

So is the crucial part for our bikes 530?
I take it that is the chain pitch?

Are X Ring and O Ring methods of sealing? Do these make the chain wider?

I have seen 530 (in both X-Ring and O-Ring)

So what is D.I.D? Standard chain without either X-RING or O-Ring sealing?

I need to put a new chain and sprocket set on my bike but i'm a bit confused as to which one i actually need.

520, 530 x-ring, o-ring, D.I.D ???

What is the difference in them?

Can any of you helpful souls point me in the right direction

Only one thing - I want a gold chain

If you could post a link to something suitable without costing an arm or leg (or both) that would be great

Thanks

Hi

Just thought i would add a little update about this.

I decided to pull the carbs in the end and have a look around.

Initial findings where

3 x 90 main jets and 1 x 95  ::)
Different Float levels for each carb
Idle mixture screw tips - 2 ok, 1 bent and 1 that looked like it had been ground down from a larger screw
Found 2 of the mixture screw holes also each had one extra o-ring in there where some eejyt had failed to remove them before installing the  dodgy screws.

One of the float valves appears to be a little shorter than the others
One of the float hinges appears to be the wrong size as it is a really tight fit in the  mount - luckily managed to remove it without damage.

Good news is all the passages appear clear and unmarked

The slow jet has already been changed to a 42 but i also have 40's as spares

I have ordered new 110 and 115 mains as i am running pods and a 4-1 pipe
New float valves ordered too

I have also bought a complete new (used) set of carbs - so hopefully a will be able to make up one good set from the 2
and have plenty of spares for any future mishaps

I recall the chap i bought it from telling how he had spent hours setting up the carbs -

Yes it must have taken ages to bodge them so much - d**khead  ::)

Not getting a lot of time to look at this but i'm in no rush and i'm enjoying the tinkering

CB500/550 / Which Carbs? CB550K3
« on: October 08, 2013, 06:26:04 PM »
Hi

I need to rebuild my carbs (PD46A) and after looking around it seems parts are more widely available for the 069A type carb.

Is there any preference over which carbs are best.

If mine are going to be a pain to sort i may consider fitting the 069A carbs

Is this ok?
Any issues i may run in to?

Should i keep my PD46 Carbs?

Im not bothered at all about originality as my bike has been chopped about quite a lot - just want the best running carbs fitted

Any advice would be great

Thanks

The only problem i can see with the above is that my exhaust runs under the bike so hides the frame rail on one side.

Is it ok to lift the bike with wood packing underneath the engine?

I was thinking of a paddock stand but dont like the idea of having to stand behind the bike to steady it while you hoist it up.

Have also been looking at this kind of thing - which seems quite handy

CB500/550 / PD46A Carbs on CB750 same as PD46A Carbs on CB550?

Hi

Just a quick question - as above

Are they the same carbs?

Yes, standard points etc.

Just had a look at the hondaman - looks good. Quite fancy one of them.  :D

My first thought is, isn't it strange that after one week without the engine running, it starts (with difficulty) without the choke?

Hmmm I thought that too - but my garage is nice and warm if that would make any difference.

I am going to empty the fuel out of the tank and check the float in carb 4 tomorrow.
I'll clean and gap the plugs and see how (if) it starts with fresh fuel

CB500/550 / Lifting the bike - no centre stand

Just got round to thinking i would like to be able to raise my bike to get the back wheel off at some point.

Going to prove fairly difficult without a centre stand.

Whats the favourite method  - paddock stand or some kind of lift under the engine?

Hi John

Can that be done with the carbs in situ or do they need to be pulled?
