Misc / Open / Re: When does a bike become exempt from road tax?
« on: March 07, 2017, 10:44:29 AM »
OK, thanks Mike. If that works it sounds fine, mine is not exempt until next year anyway and possibly a further spanner in the works as it wasn't registered until 1981. I have all the dating evidence for 1977 manufacture and that is recorded with DVLA although not shown on the V5.

The £25 fee appears to only be if you don't have the V5 so I wouldn't expect you to have paid it (unless you didn't have the V5!).

I guess there the same on the 550&400
55o may well be the same but the 400 has a threaded boss on the tank that the tap screws on to.

Presumably to do that you would need to send the V5 to DVLA to change the taxation class.
I suspect a Post Office would not be able to do it if the bike was already taxed as this would be too confusing.

Also if anyone is interested: He is offering a cheap (ish) reconditioned Hondaman electronic ignition unit to #@%$ Brits only (on the US site). I'm sure you can contact him on his site mentioned above.
Thanks for posting this. I have been in touch with HondaMan and taken him up on his offer so will see how I get on with the ignition when it arrives.

Have you tried looking in the Honda Shop Manual (in Ashimoto's Dropbox)?
I don't know how it compares to the Haynes version, may be worth a look.

I tend to agree with Mike. It may be a faff with the rings, but I think it would be a bigger faff with the gudgeon pin circlips when the pistons are in the bores

Andy,
I have an original front rim with light pitting if that's any use (wanted to check condition before posting).
Come to that I also have a complete front wheel, again with light pitting on the rim, which came off my own bike - I managed to pick up a very nice S/H one for less than the price of having mine rebuilt with a new or rechromed rim so went down that route.
Also came across this thread on stainless spokes, not for the 400 but probably still relevant: http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php?topic=5596.0

I have two Norbar wrenches that have always served me well.
The smaller one of the two is fine for bikes.

Do you have a link for the ignition, if it is still available?
I don't know my way around the US site and know where to look.

Just been looking at Roy's build thread again.
Details of the painter he used are on page 8 of the thread, but I don't know if he ever discovered whether the paint used was metallic or candy.
Looks stunning though ...

Welcome from me too.
I like the 350/4 and that is a nice green, especially when caught in sunlight.
I always liked the Ilex Green as used on G5 models too, but not so keen on the lighter greens such as the candy jade green of the 500.
Ah well, personal taste, each to their own ....
As for new posts I'd go for the CB350/400 section unless it's a really general query; someone will always spot your post!

« on: February 27, 2017, 01:23:39 PM »
I knew about this Julie - I have a bike in this category  - although I couldn't have told you the cut-off date.

As you say, there appears to be nothing on the DVLA site that actually tells you this.

It does seem that there is a hole in their system - logically it should either not let you apply for SORN if the vehicle doesn't need it, or if it does then that status should be preserved.

From memory I seem to recall that I tried to SORN the bike when I bought it in 2012 (didn't realise it was that long ago!) and only found out about this bit of the SORN regs when the system wouldn't let me SORN the bike. I haven't tried again so don't know what would happen now, sounds like I needn't bother trying.

Welcome from me too.
Yes, that is a nice looking bike. I like the look of the twin upswept silencers.
Don't worry about your English, we can understand you and Piki completely which is the main thing!

I used Rust-Oleum Flexible Fabric Paint in Silver, £4.99 from Homebase, which did the job nicely.
Whichever paint you use make sure the edges of the stencil are well pressed to the seat and spray in thin coats to minimise 'bleeding' around the edges of the stencil.

Me too. Very pleased with the decals he did for me, and a great guy to deal with.
