CB350/400 / Re: Fork oil renewal
« on: August 10, 2020, 04:09:16 PM »
Thanks. I'll see if I can undo it. (13mm hex key). I know a previous owner fiddled with the bike as the drive sprockets are not standard either (higher gearing).

CB350/400 / Fork oil renewal
« on: August 10, 2020, 03:10:39 PM »
Decided to change front fork oil. Drained both no problem. Looked like relatively clean ATF to me. Anyway, on removing filler cap I expected to see the spring but about an inch below the top of the stanchion is what looks like some sort of plug with an internal hexagon about 13mm and there is no way I can pour the oil in. Any idea what is wrong please.

Most peculiar! My 400/4 has about 100 degrees stop to stop and I'm sure it's getting full throttle. More investigation needed.

I have a 1978 F2. Horn on mine has 2 terminals. One goes to horn switch (Light Green on mine), maybe brown on yours and other goes to earth as Bryanj says. I'd check if your brown goes live when switch is pushed.

Thanks. I knew it was something like that. Honest! One of the little O rings was displaced slightly due to lack of dowel. Hope gearbox is ok. :-[

CB350/400 / Oil Pump
« on: July 10, 2020, 10:30:48 AM »
Excuse my ignorance but why has the CB400 have a double oil pump? I could understand if it was dry sump with separate oil tank like the 750 (scavenge pump and feed pump) but 400 is wet sump. Most cars are wet sump and have single pump.

CB350/400 / Re: Clutch pull still very hard...

It fits next to clutch lever to left of speedo. Gives lighter clutch but less cable pull. I removed it as with my clutch it made it more difficult to select neutral due to slight clutch drag. Really it is curing the symptom rather than the cause.

I fitted a similar one only a 50A one as it had built in heat sink fins (about a fiver) to a CB400F and it seems fine so far.

Me too. My first visit to the TT I was treated to the sound of 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 cylinder bikes and of course the smell of Castrol R.

Noise doesn't get louder after removing dipstick.

I'm only a (ex) car mechanic and it was always mechanical (compression, valve timing and clearances), then electrical (points, timing) then carb(s) last. Last time I set timing on a bike it was using a marked stick down the plughole. A bit different with this modern (1978) stuff!

CB350/400 / Knocking Noise
« on: June 20, 2020, 04:25:34 PM »
I have recently bought a CB400F2 that is off the road at the moment. It is making a knocking noise at idle (carbs have been stripped and cleaned by a professional and fine balanced by me as best I can). Noise becomes less when put in gear and rear brake lightly applied. After reading various posts about this and not being familiar with this engine I would really appreciate if anybody in the Wirral area would have a listen for me. Petrol/beer tokens gladly supplied. I think it might be primary chain but not sure. I don't want to strip the engine yet if it will be ok for a while.

Thanks. Those are the tyres I was thinking of, although I will probably go for 100 on the rear.
