CB500/550 / Re: CB550 Centre stand stop?
« on: May 04, 2018, 10:29:25 PM »
The original exhaust had a rubber on the bottom of the pipes to cushion the centre stand, the motad bracket should have a hole in it, that a big door stop rubber goes to act as a stop  ;)

That's what I was thinking of using or the rubber screw in foot off the washing machine.
I may try the washing machine foot next time the missus is out  :D

Thanks

CB500/550 / CB550 Centre stand stop?
« on: May 04, 2018, 10:09:07 PM »
Just removed my ropey 4 into 2 exhaust, no idea what make.

Fitted my Motad 4 into 1, the bracket on the Motad stops the center stand but only just.
The very edge on the bracket just stops the very edge of the stand foot and the stand foot the other side is probably only 10mm from the chain.

I have made the clearance bigger for now by fitting a bolt facing the ground in a hole in the bracket so the stand hits the bolt. Does the job but looks a bit naff.

My question is, when these bikes were new, what was there to stop the center stand?

My old exhaust sat lower than the Motad so it was just the silencer stopping the stand.

Smart cars use M6 studs for the exhaust manifold.

They were way too small to hold the exhaust manifold on, the manifold would expand with the heat and frequently snap them. Spent many a unhappy afternoon replacing them on mine.

Why would they go to the trouble of making different ones?

Would have saved money making it standard  :o

First pic is my 74 CB550 K0, ignore the metal plate with switches on someone added, ive got rid and moved the ignition switch back to the correct place.

Second pic is from a bike on Ebay, also a 74 550.

Idiot lights are in a different order?

Steve, the three screws holding the pump can be tough. Maybe do it on a warm engine with a good fitting impact driver. I'd try changing the pressure switch first as that will be quick and on the pump anyway.

Thanks, I'll warm it up first and take it easy.

Where abouts in Maidenhead are you? I spent all my Childhood in Littlewick Green.

How much for a set of o-rings? Might as well replace them.
I have them on my eBay page for £7.99 but do them for £7.00 inc post to forum members. I also have the oil pressure switch in stock for £14.99. Don't feel obliged to buy them from me though.

I'll take a set of o-rings and a pressure switch, can you PM me your details, thanks  :)

I would pop the oil pump off, get a new o'ring kit from Nurse Julie and fit a new switch  ;D ;D ;D

Is that a straightforward job, changing the o-rings?

Just checked and it does smell a bit of petrol.

When I first got the bike, it had been sitting in a barn for years. When I first drained the oil, it really stank of old fuel.

Wonder if there is still some old fuel circulating in there.

Think I'll do another oil change this weekend.

Also whipped one of the tappet covers off, plenty of oil up there so I guess the oil pump is ok?

Today is the first time I've taken my 550 K0 out for a decent ride since getting it registered.

Normally oil pressure light goes out the minute the engine fires.

Done about 50 miles, but noticed that after about 15 miles the oil pressure light would come on at anything below 2000 rpm.

Let it cool down for an hour and it was back to normal, oil light goes out the minute the engine fires up.
Rode around a bit more and its starts doing it again, oil light on below 2000 to 2500 rpm.

Using 10W 40 oil, oil was only changed 100 miles ago.

Engine sounds normal, bike performs normal.

Seems as if the oil is becoming too thin in the hot weather?

Get a dating certificate from here:

http://www.vjmc.com

got mine in less than 48hrs

I insured mine on the chassis number and then rode to the MOT.

Be warned, some insurance companies will only register on chassis number for 28 days or so. So you need MOT, and the DVLA to issue you registration in that timeframe. If your bike fails the MOT then thats another chunk of time.

DVLA were quick and turned mine around in 8 days.

Peter James insurance does not have a limit on how long you can keep it insured on chassis number.

This guy has been 'selling' stuff on Ebay for at least the past month.

Bikes, Boats, Cars etc, etc.

Uses multiple Ebay accounts, the moment its taken down its back up under another account.

He's been trying to sell a 1930 AJS for the past month, always under a different account, and he moves around the country a lot.

Just click on sellers other items to see what he supposedly owns.
