New Member Introductions / Re: Hello from the North East of England

Welcome Chris, you are in the right place here for friendly advice & banter.
Whereabouts in the NE are you? Was there in the 70's in Newcastle then latterly  Sunderland. Remember the Westgate Raod in Newcastle being a Mecca for bikers/bike shops. Think Harry Woods was the Honda 5-star dealer and Cowies in Sunderland. There was also an old  motorbike shop in Sunderland at the back of the Poly somewhere. A guy called Crozier ran it but he was never there, as he was always in the boozer up the road. His place was crammed with old Brit bikes but he had a really nice Honda  Benly CB92 once  that I was after (rare even then) . Camped outside the pub at closing time one night to try to do a deal with him on it but he told me in no uncertain terms to sod off.

Yes ..thinking back I paid 550 for repaint of my 750K0 bodyset back in 2010, and even then I had to haggle and offer pound notes, plus two round trips of about 100 miles. So the kit is good value and the sandcastonly boys tell me the wrinkle tank 'wrinkles' are spot on correct...which is a real accolade coming from them. A big thank you to David at Saisei for making this stuff available to us at a reasonable and 'known' cost... he's a really good guy to deal with too so +1 with you on that James.

Well got this bad boy working after  work tonight  and blasted the mega rusty seat base  above and looking much better now. Never used a sandblaster before . Man is it satisfying seeing all that rust disappear. Before blasting I dunked it in oxalic acid solution for about two weeks.

Other Bikes / Cleaned up my frames at last
« on: April 23, 2015, 09:04:19 AM »
Spent 12 hours outside yesterday on a day off from work,  stripping two CB twin frames... really enjoyable day. Just need to clean up a few areas and treat with phosphoric acid and jobs a good one.
Found that an angle grinder run at 100v (used an auto transformer or 'Variac',  with a really heavy duty cup brush, transformed the grinder/brush from a flailing monster to a very sedate and not so dangerous method of removing paint after application of paint remover ('Rustins' .. removed from the skip at work.) You could probably also use a lamp dimmer to control it ...simply connect the lamp dimmer in series with the live (brown) mains lead of the grinder.

CB750 / Re: DSS Price reductions Mudguard and Generator covers
« on: April 19, 2015, 12:38:48 PM »
When I first bought my 750K0 I bought a new Genuine front guard (K0/K1/early K2) version from Silvers but when I ran my finger down the chrome you could feel imperfections in it so I returned it. Of the other 14 he had in stock at the time, they only found one perfect one and I got the same story that if they complained to Honda about the quality  there was the underlying fear  that they would just discontinue supply of the part  concerned. I think a lot of people wax on too much about trying to achieve the original look of Honda chrome. Let's face it, it was always crap &  poorly finished with linish marks in it, not made to last much longer than the 1 year warranty period ( a lot of it didn't even last that long hence the 1970 'Muffler warranty replacement programme'. After I saw a 'blingy' 750K0 on the VJMC stand at Newark in January, which looked absolutely stunning, I have changed my stance and aim to get my chroming done to look as perfect as possible (the way Honda should have done it in the first place).

Asked this and got reply, from Yamiya:

Ashley Derrick:- Great to see you are now selling CB400F parts. Will the original Sankei front exhaust pipes ever be re-manufactured please? Kind regards .. Ash (UK)

Motorcycle Yamiya 闇矢屋:-  Ashley Derrick Sorry for our late reply. We're afraid we don't have a plan to re-manufacture the original Sankei front exhaust so far. However, we will have more and more spare parts for CB400F.

We have a large  lapping machine here but I would have to separate the disc from the carrier to use this. Vic World evidently separates the two but how much of a job is it to re-rivet back together again safely?

On the Triethanolamine. My chemist mate told me I would never be able to source it because terrorists use it in one of their own 'brews'. One minute later I found it on eBay and ordered for a fiver. Don't you just love eBay sometimes !

CB750 / Re: Disc Grinding
« on: April 15, 2015, 10:03:31 AM »
Have always used a disc cutter in the past, it cuts from both sides at the same time so, it is kept true. Have seen people cut them on a lathe before but, a surface grinder should work if the disc is not in bad condition.

Do you know a company who can quote me on doing it Graham?

CB750 / Disc Grinding
« on: April 15, 2015, 08:18:10 AM »
I have got three CB750 front brake discs (rotors)  one from K7, one from K1-K6 and a rare 750K0 one. The only one I need to use is the K0 one but typically it is the only one with slight wear grooves (nothing bad). Anyone know the best way to have it ground/  re-furbed flat? We have several surface grinders here at work but I guess it would be a totally different machine tool to do this properly. That disc came on a '69 750K0 wheel with perfect chrome  rim and axle etc bought and shipped from the USA for less than 100 quid, inc shipping and NO import charges. It was shipped from the States just wrapped in cling film with the tyre and tube still on. Those were the days my friend,  about 4 years ago. The import charges alone  would probably cost that much now.

Any ideas ?

Misc / Open / Another Witches Brew :)
« on: April 15, 2015, 07:52:32 AM »
Got loads of spokes to re-plate and was concerned about hydrogen embrittlement using strong acids to remove the old zinc plate so have this  'witches'  brew to try, instead :-

To make up 1 litre of stripping solution:-

100 grammes ---  Sodium Hydroxide  (Source B &Q, Wilkinsons, ect)

90 grammes --- EDTA---- (EthyleneDiamineTetraAcetic acid)  Source:   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130544728488?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

4 grammes ----  Trimetholamine --- Source :    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321368003934?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Immersion is at 70 degrees C +/- 5 degrees.

Will let you know how I get on.

Yes welcome.

Stay in my brother-in-law's  cottage quite a bit in Birchover  .. great festival there at the campsite in July. Seen some nice fours parked in centre of Bakewell inc. a Yellow 400/4.

Nice tank Al. And a nice bit of chrome work ;)

+ one on the 'sloper Al. Problem is, every time you post it makes me yearn to own one again but it's the lack of supply of the std pipes that holds me back.

and yes it's great to have a chromer on here offering advice and guidance .. can't be the easiest of businesses to run and keep everyone happy, so good on you Mark for not only joining us on here but continuing to post.

Thought they were supposed to just clip on with the welded on clips on the bottom of the tank. I just use mini (BL not modern)  chrome trim cut down on one side  .. as do a few ace restorers and sandcast gurus. Freddie used to sell the same but at a silly price.

CB350/400 / Re: My 350 project

I was told that a famous northern restoration guru  uses this method for the switches and M/cyl but not confirmed. Heat the parts up then  spray with PJ1 satin that's been shaken then put in in hot water to get spray can as hot as possible, then shaken again , then bake parts in an oven then finish with a light polish in Solvol. Evidently it's indestinguishable from the original anodize finish. Power coat is a bit too thick. I told this to a guy near me, loaned him my PJ1, and his 750K2 bike was nominated for bike of the year in CB so sounds good.  He also borrowed my zinc plating gear.

I was going to try home anodizing but I think I will just use this method now. It's also been mentioned on the sandcastonly site. Somewhere in an email I have the recommended temperatures for baking.
