CB500/550 / Re: What is the spring for?

Wouldn't the floats keep pressure on the valve even if the spring wasn't incorporated in the needle i.e. just a plain fixed pin lodging on the float tab?

CB500/550 / What is the spring for?
« on: March 18, 2015, 02:42:21 PM »
On cleaning and replcacing the carbs on my 1974 CB550 four, one of them is overflowing and luckily it is the number 4 (end) carb, so I can remove the float bowl quite easily to check the float valve.

But I can't figure out the purpose of the small sprung needle in the centre of the needle valve.

Does anyone know please?

I don't know if aluminium would be too thick. It would need to cling to the profile of the 10mm curved plastic around the edge of the seat.

I have now tried chrome tape but it doesn't stick well to the plastic and it also tends to crumple around the bends.

I'm now thinking of glueing the tape to the plastic and cutting it with a sharp knife where it crumples in order that it will lie flat.

I've bought the tape, so as you say - nothing to lose.

As they rejected my application anyway, I could have waited until the seat was finished and fixed the seat on properly. Ah well - I'll be re-applying on the 27th.

I have a brand new CB550F side panel in Flake Sunrise Orange if you ever need to get an example of unfaded paintwork for a paint match.

As the tank is original, I took the colour from that. I think I have as near match as I'm going to get with the paint I'm using, but still have the laquer coat to go on the panels.

Just remembered - After removing the seat, I plonked it back on just to take a picture of the bike to send away with the registration, hence the high appearance, as it wasn't fixed to the bike by its hinges or catch.

Is the 550 Flake Sunrise Orange? looks too deep a colour to be Candy Gold Custom.

Also what's up with the seat? seems to be too high. The chrome trim on the tank and seat should form a continuous line and yours doesn't.

First detailed pic of a  CB550K I've seen, fork shrouds look a little odd at the bottom compared to the 500, can't work out what the difference is.

Nice bike though, like it.

Yes it's flake sunrise orange with good tank paintwork and one good (but cracked) side panel. The other side panel was from a CB500 and was sun faded so I decided to repaint them both. Will post more pictures when I've finished recommissioning it.

No idea about the seat. It feels and looks good so it's staying (I don't want to go over budget). I've taken off all the chrome around the seat trim. It looks neat and tidy with the resultant white, but I'm looking to use chrome tape to keep the original appearance.

After sending in all the required registration forms and documents by Special Delivery (£7.15) and including a return Special Delivey stamped envelope (another £7.15) I finally got a response today.
They returned the whole lot as 'rejected'.

The reason? Because I sent the application in too early.

I asked for the registration to start on April 1st, but for this date, you have to send the application in up to two weeks prior i.e. 18th March.

Unfortunatley, the numskulls at DVLA hadn't the common sense to hold my application for 7 days before processing it, so now I have to wait 7 days and send the whole lot back again costing another £14.30 in postage.

Will send again on 18th and keep you up to date with the saga.

Is that particular bike actually for sale?
It looks like an ad for their restoration service to me.

Hi Tony and welcome to the forum.

I remember buying my first CB500 four in 1974.

The first thing we did back then was to change the rear shocks and Japanese tyres (lethal in the wet).

I put Dunstall 4 into 2 exhausts on mine and it sounded awesome!

I thought about changing the handlebars for the euro one, but don't were I can find one?

I put Norton straight bars on my last CB350. I like the look and feel of a forward leaning position. Wish I hadn't sold the bike though

CB500/550 / Any ideas for restoring chrome seat trim on CB500/550?

Does anyone have any ideas for restoring the chrome strip around my 1974 CB550 seat?

The chrome layer has been damaged over the years and it cannot be replaced without buying an original Honda seat because the chrome strip is attached to the edge of the seat cover moulding.
I have rubed the chrome down with emery cloth and this leaves the (white) plastic underneath exposed, which is actually better looking than the crappy chrome look.

However, I would still like to get the chrome back, and the only thing I can think of is chrome tape.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Misc / Open / Re: Brake calliper piston removal
« on: March 07, 2015, 04:24:06 PM »
The first mistake most people make is disconnecting the caliper DON'T DO IT put the ccaliper ina tin or bucket still connected and usr the master cyl to pump the piston out

Just did my CB550 like that. Replaced the master cyclinder first - filled with hydraulic fluid - took the caliper off and just pumped the brake lever - the piston and disc came out a treat.
