CB500/550 / Re: Front Caliper clearance.

I've a new Vesrah set. Near as dammit 13mm. They have a chamfer all round the abrasive face. So to start with only about 40mm dia of the 51mm will touch disc until it wears in. So no full braking until about 1.5mm wears off the face.

I've an NE brand set for a 500 and another for 550 here and as usual they are in the 500, but not the 550. Always been my experience.
Check Fowlers for dealer price, £4.90 inc VAT, and they are OOS.

I proved to an apprentice that i could be as accurate with a feeler gauge as he was with a dwell box, it is down to experience and practice.
All the 500/550 are not the same, there are at least 2 different advancers with different advance curves, when i was in the trade i NEVER had a bad set of daichi contacts OR condenser, now its different due to change of factory and QC.
Seems any old numbers may have been superseded but whatever, I have three different parts lists and manuals for four variations of 500 and 550 and they are now all called up as the same so Delta has a point.
The most important thing is that the spark comes at the right time in the cycle and I believe that they are all 5 deg BTDC at idle and 25 deg fully advanced. Also there needs to be enough time to (for a better word) energise the coils. Presumably dwell plays a part here but of course the time will in change inversely according to RPM.
And anyway I'm grumpy as I just sheared a bolt off in the sump of my 500 and it was not in anyway tight. So I'll be laying underneath it tomorrow.

Just to add the owners manual for the 500s and 550K3 both specify setting for points gap at 0.3-0.4mm. I wonder what the dwell variation is between 0.3 and 0.4.
And the two cam assemblies numbers for Hitachi and Toyo are the same for 500 and 550K3, so you would think the dwell is the same.
It's on page 181 of my manual and Honda are capable of making one or two or three mistakes.

We often used to give directions with names of pubs.  Means nothing to younger ones, but still do with old mates except now they are a block of flats.

Misc / Open / Re: Candy Jade Green.
« on: December 10, 2023, 06:53:04 PM »
Was originally Jade Green, goes with ruby red, emerald green, garnet brown, sapphire blue. Think the US started calling it Jet and it stuck in places. Jade green on CMSNL.
My K0 is in original jade green. I like the fact that it's unusual. But I do have other sets in custom gold and ruby red. And have a spare set that may get to be garnet brown. Shame I missed those side panels yesterday
.
Excuse the old front wheel. The original has the original tyre, but don't trust it to use.

There's also this colour film about. Think it's also a Lancaster raid out of Lincolnshire I think.

Desperately Seeking!! / Re: CB360-350F-450K Swing Arm Collar Wanted
« on: December 01, 2023, 07:36:59 PM »
Just sitting here hoping to get fed shortly:
333 is the CB350 Four part and according to CMS 52141-333-000 also fits some CB400 fours.

But notice that some CB400 fours call up 52141-369-000.
The 333 version shows holes for grease to come through, the 369 does not show the holes as probably doesn't need them as the grease is fed from S/A nipple.
Maybe otherwise the same.

I was up and down to Tippetts regularly in the early 70s. Biggest stock of Honda spares around.

Only just read this thread. Sorry to read your news Phil. Big strides made even in the last 10 years in treating this and glad you are getting prompt attention. I think we all here spend far more time in the garage than actually riding bikes these days anyway. Keep busy.

I would think cheaper units are available if you are not worried about originality. I got a unit with the correct side dip and the pilot fitting, but can't remember if it included bulbs, for £8.99 inc. delivery off ebay a couple of years ago Looks good enough on my 78 model.

If it's the only way of sourcing the long mounting studs/bolts the your bike your choice. There are a couple of sets on UK ebay. I'd choose the hex head to look slightly standard.

Rear drum is 180mm dia. on 550.  390 is 550F part no. With the shoes centralised on the backplate, what is the diameter?

That's a bargain Ken, £50 from CMS!
