That's excellent, clears up the thing about hollow tip and solid. It runs as though a smaller cutaway would be better but they're original and in good order.  Honda knew best I'm sure.
I spotted a reference to fuel levels later last night, someone had checked with a clear tube - 3mm below fuel bowl top.
Might have a look at that out of interest.

Thanks Deltarider, very useful info.

CB500/550 / idle jet differences , 069's
« on: May 27, 2021, 06:21:21 PM »
Looking at carb kits for sale for the CB550f, there seems to be two types : an air screw that is solid paired with a long idle jet, then a hollow air screw with a side hole in it as well with a smaller bodied idle jet. My 1976 F1 has the solid air screw pairing and as I cannot get rid of the huge bogging down just above idle, I wonder if they are the right ones ?

I have done all the usual things - points/dwell, ignition timing, advancer OK, fuel level Ok and it idles well and reacts to air screw changes. It's not too bad after several miles and warmed up, but from cold it just won't play off idle without full choke but then, after clearing up and revving OK it ,obviously, goes way too rich.

The carbs have been stripped and cleaned ( they were OK as it happens ) but I seem to be missing something, probably obvious !

Any pointers very welcome.
Regards all, Terry.

Correct, that's what the Honda charts show - piston size and bore size, the mean difference being .025mm (.001"). That's the dimension  Murdock asked for  with his original drawing. But as has been pointed out, check with Cruzzing, are they happy with that clearance for their particular piston material ?

Hope Murdock has stopped scratching his head now after all this up and down (side to side ?) discussion !

Now, let's start again with ring gaps !!!!

The Honda chart shows a piston to bore difference of .oo1", which is .ooo5" per side.  (half a thou). That's hell of a tight fit ,but that's what the chart says and I believe people have had that done.
How they don't seize up when the piston heats up I don't know .

Careful running in required  !

So to fill the figure in on Murdocks' drawing would be two thou , one each side ?

The other one is in piston diameter - 58.35  is 2.297, their figure shows a piston bigger than the original.

I find it better to substitute MAXIMUM for their word serviceable, it makes more sense to me that way.

There are 2 errors on that chart which will create some confusion !

Same problem I expect when I receive the new diaphragm in a couple of days. Strange thing is, the original two sided lip seal fitted perfect and there were no leaks, no diaphragm, just that nylon seal. There must have been some sort of revision sometime.
The seal CMSL list looks like my original but shipping etc costs are a no no.
We'll see.

Many thanks for the measurement, looking good there, and yes, the diaphragm is missing !.  It's how it was when I bought it, I assumed it was original and realised it was missing when I had a better study of the parts diagram this afternoon.

That explains  everything. Back to the main agent.....

The new seal was in a Honda packet , from a Honda main dealer. It does'nt appear to be the right one and is a poor fit. One way up it leaks, the other it does'nt fit properly. The original was a two sided soft lip seal, the shallow lip sealing in the centre of the recess in the cap. The new seal is a hard seal, lip one side only. It is too small in diameter too . As it has the correct part number, I'm wondering if the master cylinder is a wrong look-alike ?

The reservoir is 43mm inside diameter, can someone check the int dia on their their 550f please ?

I thought I better check some of the other bike  V5's I have dormant: ( all old blue ones , all Honda's )
3 sorned on-line OK, but two said the system won't let me do it on line and I have to go to a Post Office to tax the vehicle. I sense problems.

Those two were classed as not licensed. The voices in the radiator tell me the DVLA are up to something, I'm heading for the post office sharpish to ensure I don't lose those numbers, both the sort DVLA love to sell.

Looks like I ought to start selling things I'll never get around to, must get the paperwork right as a priority.

Regards all, Terry.

Just checked a bike I've had (in bits) for 26 years - a CB77. It was classed as not taxed, so I sorned it. At least it is now on their radar as currently cared for.  It was an old blue V5c , so I suppose It could appear forgotten about.

The other bike I was worried about is already classed as  sorned and I could'nt find a way of updating that.

Regards, Terry.

My guess is they are checking who is still alive and/or still own that vehicle.  Tens of thousands of vehicles over the years have been scrapped without DVLA being notified. Dead numbers they could sell or allocate.
If you get such a letter, ensure you reply and tell them it's a treasured possession or you MAY LOSE the reg. number !

Thanks for the nudge, I'll dig out some old V5's of my long term (non happening ) projects and see about re-sorning them.

Regards, Terry.

CB750 / Re: CWC outer spokes too short on bend.
« on: May 18, 2021, 06:06:01 PM »
I've  now had a good look at the front wheel.   The rim is not central on the hub. If I slacken all the spokes and re-set the rim 1/16" to the right, the spokes will lie correctly and the threads showing should disappear.

It will have to wait though until I have time to take the tyre off, must check what happens inside the rim.

Regards all, Terry.
