CB350/400 / Why did Honda use dome headed nuts on cylinder heads?
« on: September 21, 2021, 07:21:32 PM »
Whilst cleaning up my cylinder head nuts I wondered why use dome headed nuts when you can't see them - why not just use a full nut?

Morning.
Whilst riding home from work last night my dipped headlight stopped working, switched on to main beam, that didn’t work either! The only way I could get the headlight to work was the pass/ flash light switch.
Was wondering if anyone had come across this before or where I should look first.
Thanks in advance.
Chris.

Before blaming the switch I would check the earth side of the switch first - especially if the clock illumination went out as well.

...Graham polished the cases for me 4 years ago and I never had to take the tube of Solvol to them.
Men have go their uses,  ;D  but why didn't you make him clean up the underside of the rear mudguard.... it shows!  :o

Not original but I'd polish up to remove the visible rusting then a coat of some sort of underseal / Waxoyl to keep the noise down on gravel strikes!
I suspect the reality is a used bike will show use.

You might get the tensioner in after head on but you wont get the guide in after head on

Thanks Bryan - I had it in my mind that one came out when I was stripping down the engine with the head in place - clearly I'll get both in situ before I fit the head.

CB350/400 / Cam chain guides question?
« on: September 20, 2021, 11:15:46 PM »
When is it best to fit the cam chain guides, before you fit the cylinder head or afterwards?

In NJ's rebuild they appear to be in place before fitting the cylinder head - I guess it's easier to put them in position at this stage as presumably you can use a torch to ensure they are fitted correctly at the bottom end?.

I've seen those in tubeless  car tyres in the past - I just assumed it's a snowball type situation.

Very interesting and honest post about the painting process. Back in the 1970's I did a stint in a paint shop for a couple of weeks - in the days when dealers had there own bodyshops. It was when you used lead rather than compound fillers. In the last few days after seeing the painter Paul apply paint I had a go with the gun - I think his reply was - great job Ted a shame about the curtains!

I was looking at NJ's project rebuild of her 400 engine (essential revision/homework) - I can see an extra O ring between the cylinder block and the crankcasing - not sure if it's just the one side (left hand No: cylinder side in photo) or both. I assume it's the oil feeds to the cylinder heads so both sides need a ring?

I respect Triggers workmanship so presumably most folk here do this on a rebuild?

As my cylinder head is not yet in place for a couple of weeks I'm minded to do the Trigger upgrade- does it matter if the seal sits on top or underneath the casing gasket?
Is it necessary to alter the gasket hole to accomodate the ring or does it simply add extra compression to the dowel seal?

I assume I can just raise my block a tad to sneak them in - going to need the ring(s) if I do from NJ then?

I have in mind the Silk was a reworked Scott??

Yes the Silks were made in Darley Abbey. I spent many a happy hour white water canoeing in the river there.

Yes the first Silks used the Scott engine - I believe they went on to design their own engines based in part of the original Scott ones the firm stopped production in late 1979 it was a local frame builder in Spondon who built the frames. For some reason I thought they also used the J.A.P. engine probably as I have seen Spondon Framed specials with such engines in my youth with a Silk badged tank.

I have  no idea but as long as the oil light goes out reasonably quickly I think it's enough to do the job.

The rubber parts fell to pieces when refurbishing my carbs. Am I ok to assume it’s ok to run without them?

Thanks
Charlie

I can't work out what they do aside from making it easier to assemble all four carbs onto the mounting plate.
