ASHI< are you a Hull lad?  ( I was born in Hessle!)

Yes I am Hull born and bred -  live in Willerby not so far from Hessle in fact I bought a 1969 CB250K0 from Hessle a few weeks back!

Quality Chrome are very near me in Hull  but I was not particularly impressed with the parts they did for me. Some of the parts cost more to re-chrome than you can buy them for new from David Silvers! They took ages to to get back to me and did not give a price upfront, so they basically can charge what they like. Depends on what you need rechroming really but anything thin like starter cover and clutch cover they seemed to remove a lot more metal that I thought necessary. ChrisR has a few nightmare stories about chromers he has used. It's the one area where you entrust your rare part to someone else  (e.g. K0 750 double-cut mudguard (fender)) and it can come back totally trashed. If you do the polishing yourself you must remove every trace of the nickel base. To check this I paint the part with a coppering solution made up of sulphuric acid and copper sulphate that the old guys used to use before marking out blue became popular. It will leave copper on the areas that are bare steel but any areas with nickel will show as a slightly yellowish colour. The copper will not adhere to the steel and can be easily buffed off afterwards. You can then tell chromers that you just want the part plating and it should be relatively cheap. I did this on my 400/4 parts in 1986. The place in Hull (who the Quality chrome guy used to work for) told me I had totally wasted my time in polishing myself but I told him to just chrome them and I would take a chance. The parts came out perfect and 26 years later still look the same. He obviously did not trust me that I had removed all of the base nickel plate. The Chrome plate can be removed by reverse plating with a caustic soda electrolyte and stainless steel electrode. Nickel is more difficult to remove by electrolysis and acid removal will get into any rust pits and cause even deeper pits to form. I think there is a nickel stripper around in the States which removes nickel chemically without attacking the base steel but not tried it yet. I find you can do wonders with a Black and Decker power file (with really fine belts cheap  off Ebay) and a buffing wheel. Mucky horrible job though (often entrusted by chromers to the 'tea boy') - but it's probably the most important job of the rechroming process

I'd love to know where the Homdacrome man gets all of his bits from particularly mudguards. I guess the USA.

I wimped out and got my 750K0 paintwork done by a pro. Did my 400/4 in '86 though including the F2 pinstripes. I reckon that modern paints must be a real pain though.

Cheers Ash.

CB750 / Re: Why the sudden high prices
« on: April 27, 2011, 11:05:12 PM »
I am starting to phone specialist dealers/breakers  again and not use Ebay. I wanted a '68/'69 250/350 K0 fuel tank. Even in the States a really ratty and rusty one went for 100GBP plus shipping. I found a UK dealer who, it turns out,  had three on the shelf ranging from 30 to 40 GBP but doesn't really use eBay and although they have a website it's years out of date and they never respond to email's

Cheers AshD

Spot on restoration !!!  you should be very proud !!

Oh for those days and prices of 1986 from David Silver !! Its amazing how many of us bought from him from those MCN adverts?
Also about that time, for some strange reason Honda, slashed the prices on their exhaust systems, the 400/4 coming down to about 100GBP complete.

Cheers

If it's a K0 without the black band you can use cut down mini trim - this comes from advice kindly given to me by ChrisR.

Misc / Open / Re: Stafford show
« on: April 24, 2011, 09:54:34 AM »
Was a 'Billy no Mates' at the Stafford show yesterday 'cos the old guy I normally go with got buried on Wednesday!! Judging by the piles of junk at the show  and the eBay 750K0 rolling chassis that went for nearly 1600 quid yesterday (Please, please tell me you did not buy it UKPete!!) I am glad I bought my bikes when I did. Very little Honda stuff around, as usual, apart from a couple of overpriced 250K4's at nearly a grand each requiring total resto and some really really really ratty CB72's and the odd CD175. Managed to pick up a really nice US style rear CB350 twin rear  fender though  cheap because the guy did not know what is was off. What bits of NOS stuff I did see  were generally more that DSS would charge. That guy should get a knighthood for his services to us folk!!

There was an incomplete but decent condition Benelli 250/4  for about 1200 GBP which looked interesting. Does anyone every remember a dealer in MCM/MCN selling new Honda 250/4's with the option of converting back to 400/4 when you had passed your test. Or am I just dreaming again!!

My star of the show was the Guvnors Bridge guy Mark who brought my NOS exhausts for my CB250/350 twin resto I got from him off eBay- much better than I imagined and a really nice friendly  guy.

Worst guy at the show by a long way !!- - The 'On all Fours' guy from Sheffied - totally unfriendly / unhelpful - I gave him the benefit of the doubt at the last show I went too but alas he is still the same!!

Cheers for now - just going to get my Orthophosphoric acid bath out now!!

I think the DSS one is for a US K1 bike ('300' style) Honda should  just produce one with no holes for a lamp bracket, so the buyer can drill to suit. That's what I have told 'Eric' in Vietnam to do and also to offer them unchromed. This then opens up his market to early 750/550 owners. OK the 550 had a different wiring 'tunnel' and no wire clip but that's not the end of the world

CB750 / Re: New CB750 project - Two frame numbers!?
« on: April 15, 2011, 01:22:24 AM »
I had the same with a CB250K0 frame - the numbers had been restamped and it turned out to be a a 71 ish frame not 1968. Same as you got my money back. Not worth the hassle.

CB750 / Re: foam for seat
« on: April 15, 2011, 01:16:04 AM »
David Silver gets them from Morretti in Gloucestershire They have a nasty plastic base but someone else zoom22 on Ebay  from memory does a metal seat (again in Gloucestershire)  Morretti do the foam too. Their eBay outlet is Discovers. He told me DSS hammers him on price so the ones he sells direct have a better fit and finish (but cost slightly more )

http://www.motorcycleseats.co.uk/

I got Morrettis seat cover and foam and used a new base and trim and strap from a brand new Genuine K1 seat Here are the photos.

The real solution is Yamiya whose seats/covers/foam are first class but really really expensive. The seat is about 1000USD plus shipping  plus VAT & Import Duty

CB750 / Re: Finishing switchgear
« on: April 12, 2011, 11:46:13 PM »
Great job..look like new..very impressive!!!!
My 500 has the same switchgear (originally off a K3). I polished mine as they are not std anyway. I polished the goldwing Master cyl aswell. I have 2 duff switches though...the kill switch is very very faded - the red plastic is 'rotting' and the text on top is mush. The dipper switch is a white glued and pinned lego block.

Looking for a decent kill switch knob and any kind of intact dipper if anyone has one..?

I gave the only decent one I has to UKRob. I do have another one somewhere but not sure about the condition

Switches look great Rob - what did you use to finish the black bodies in the end.

Tricks & Tips / Re: Candy Gold Custom Tank paint + Piccies..
« on: April 09, 2011, 09:06:01 AM »
Hi Kacey,

I paid top money to have my 750K0 tank etc.  painted by Andrew Parnaby but I have two CB250K0 tanks and fork ears to paint, one in candy red and the other in candy blue (half of the tank is white). These projects don't justify bags of money spent on them so I may have a go myself. I have a large compressor and a really old Devilbiss JGA spray gun. Any advice on settings on a Devilbiss gun. It is the suction not gravity fed type.

Cheers

Re: the frame power coating. I had the following done for my 750K0 by a guy in Castleford last year, who was recommended by Andrew Parnaby and I think John Wyatt uses him too. Got all these done including blasting for 130 GBP, which I reckon was a bargain. He did them in less than a week too.

Frame
Swinging Arm
Side Stand
Centre Stand
Battery box
Bottom Yoke
Front footpegs
Engine hangers
Rear Lamp bracket
Ignition switch bracket
Various tiny bits

My mate payed well over 200GBP for less stuff from Triple S for his 750 K2  and I reckon mine is as good if not better than his.

PM me if you want his details.

cheers

You need a 341 type - If you trawl US eBay you should find a nice one fairly cheap. Also Hondacrome on eBay always has them - love to know how he gets them from and also UK 400/4 ones. The US 341 style has the four holes that fit a UK lamp bracket perfectly but the bracket sits at a slightly different angle, which only the eagle eyed will notice. A CB550 one will also fit but has a different length wiring 'tunnel' and lack of cable clip.

Eric in Vietnam (Hondaclassics) will make you a new one with no holes, if you tell him I sent you. PM me if you need info.
