Nylon Washer definitely went on the moving piston/pad. - see my kit just prior to rebuild; the washer placed on the new piston

Les, Yes, I have got copper grease behind the pads (& the nylon washer).
I'll be interested to hear how you get on with drilled disks.
At the last attempt, I also 'emery clothed' the pad faces to rougth them up; it worked for a day or so but the squeal returned. I'm wondering if it could be the caliper mounting arm; despite adjusting the clearance, no change. I plan to take the arm off and copper grease the finge pin of the caliper arm.
- I read some where, saying Honda pads can solve it; can you still get those? I think these pads are Kyoto.

Yeah, I'm really pleased with the carbs now. & what great weather over the weekend too; I was able to have some great runs around the lanes!
- just a slight squealing front disc to sort out (again!). - any tips on that?

Today I fitted my new ("042 size, press in type) slow jets to my 550k3 & it has given 'Ceebee' a new lease of life.
Tickover is so silky showroom smooth now.
I should have done it years ago (instead of all that carb cleaner, solvent soaking, ultra-sonic cleaning) I bought the jets from Sirius Consolidated Inc Canada (I got stung by UK Customs for VAT, but now I dont care)
I also reset all the carb float heights to spot-on 14.5mm, as measured at opposite end to the pivot (previously they were way out at 17mm!). My carbs are the Keihin 'PD'-type with brick-shaped floats.
I just reset the air pilot screw to 1&half turns out while carbs were apart.
Fitted the carbs back on (did it within an hour; warmed the air intake rubbers and lubed with WD40, then "massaged them into place"; I find a smooth-end screwdriver blade helps) -then at first attempt with half choke she fired up and ticked over at 1500rpm, then after a minute of so pushed choke in, and sat there ticking over at 1100rpm!
- I used to have to juggle throttle and choke, with revs going up-n-down like a yoyo, till it warmed up.
On my testride I also found that she pulls much much better from mid revs; I think that float height might have made the fuelling a little lean(?)
So if anyone out there has ever had problem with uneven tickover, new slow jets is your answer!
A few images attached.

Hi, This Autumn my 550K3 developed a slight oil weep at the LH-end (No1 Cyl) of the head gasket. Nothing too serious, just an obvious wetness after say a 30mile run. ["I'm a great believer of "if it ain't broke don't fix it", but then I dont suppose this will cure itself!] Isn't there an o-ring seal for an oil way from block-to-head on that side? Its probably the original seal, so after 35years its must be due for replacement. Me thinks its time for a top-end overhaul. I think the "head-off job" is "a tank-off, in-frame job" isnt it? Andy C

Thanks everyone. I definitely need ultra-sonic cleaning. I'll report back once i find somewhere to do it for me; or I buy a (cheap) cleaner

Hinomaru Hi, I have a 1976 CB550K3. Admittedly my 'decals' have been professionally hand painted on the tank; but i think they are sized accurately. the dimensions on mine: A to A = 12cm B to B = 55cm
hope that helps, phots to illustrate.

If your carbs are apart, I recommend you also take out the pilot jets as well for cleaning - especially if its been standing for a long time. Thefine pilot jets ("slow jets") need to be clean to stand any chance of a smooth tick over, (in my experience). & remember the pilot jets on the K3 are pressed in. http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php?topic=3283.msg12138#msg12138

Yep Carbtune is the one to get. Did my K3 with one, & worked a treat. Just make sure you've got the rest of her set up first (valve clearances, timing etc)

Is this a leak or just 'inhibiting' oil or grease on a new shock absorber?

I've been looking into that as well; I'm currently fortunate enough to still have my original 4-into-4 down pipes (with some rust & some repairs). (Ive got some aftermarket dunstall-look silencers grafted on to the down pipes).
I'm still 'saving up'' for custom down pipes. one place to try might be Alldens Exhausts, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.
Maybe if enough of us want 4-into-4 stainless down pipes we can negotiate a better deal! - thoughts...?

Excellent work. Keep it up. I luv CB550 cafe racers. If mine weren't so close to 'standard', thats what i'd do.
