Done the Tritton thing again so many times in my head over the years not making my mind up just which way to go but I have space here and I’m pretty sure it will happen at some time very soon.

Welcome Mark. Had lunch and spent an afternoon with Jim Redman a couple of years back. Very interesting man and good choice.

The four silencers do make the bike look very handsome. Strange to think the 4-1 system used on the 400/4 was also one of it's main selling points.
A question I have always wanted to ask though is if the 400 engine was basically an overboard 350/4 why did they change the clutch housing, was there a problem with the 350 clutch that was subsequently redesigned for the 400/4 engine?

Back at the time just about everyone with a four cylinder fitted a 4-1 system especially with the noise you were allowed to make back then.  The 400/4 was just a bike of its time (without the noise) and I guess Honda just about nailed it with the amount they sold.

Is that Noel Edmonds on the front cover  ;D
Dunno, had a quick glance at the tekst and discovered two names: race mechanic Dave Degens and service school manager Brian O'reilly. If needed I can scan the article for the archive.

The 400 engine would fit perfectly into a wideline frame actually :)

They would be fun on your accident report after hitting the first diesel soaked roundabout in winter.

You can the same type of mod to the front caliper mount, there's a section of the pivot bolt that's thinner for some reason, just drill and tap into the swinging mount arm so it aligns with this thinner section, the alloy is thick enough to take the grease nipple with no nut needed, copper washer again to space the nipple out a bit and seal it. Works a treat and keeps the arm swinging free for many a year.

Thanks. I took that apart on Friday so I will take a look tomorrow.

I always enjoy the trip/visit to the 'Stafford' show, not too far from Manchester.
Very nice CB750 on the VJMC stand (as image) restoration by Karen Wicks...? not sure I got the last name correct? but, the bike was spot-on.
Karen Wicks had the bike restored for her recently. She has owned it from new.

It was in interesting read which was there together with the bike.

Just back from Stafford here myself. A couple of very nice 750’s (including the one in BigAl’s pic above), a few very nice RD’s and a handful of very nice Zed’s and a couple of nice “kettles” but Mrs Allington had a very tight hold of the credit card :(

The weather there today was terrible so only really got time to spend a while in the GP Paddock area for a bit but to loosen my ear wax. It was the most interesting part (for me anyway) and a brief walk around the one or two interesting stands outside (and the plethora of utter crap) while most of them were packing up mid afternoon so had a truly terrible bone dry roast pork (at least pork coloured sawdust) roll and came home.

I have no idea how many 400’s were sold here in the UK but it was a lot especially when compared to the 500. Back then most people who had bikes usually only had one, their only mode of transport and it was used 12 months of the year to commute to work on and ride at the weekends for fun.  The 400 just hit the spot pretty much perfectly. A bike for its time when most people were riding 200 to 350cc bikes and aspired to a CB750 or a Z900 the CB400 was affordable fun.

CB500/550 / Centre stand pin seized solid
« on: October 12, 2018, 08:33:52 PM »
Just stripping the frame here ready for powder coating and the centre stand pin is seized in pretty good with many years rust. Tried giving it a couple of swift and very careful hits with a drift but it’s being a bit of a sod and not moving at all. This must be a common problem so is the best solution penetrating oil, heat then try moving it again?

Thanks guys.
