What is it? / Whats it off?
« on: August 05, 2020, 07:34:31 AM »
As per the heading this is not so much a what is it?   Its clearly a rear mudguard.

I bought it for my 550 F2 as the chrome is excellent and the frame fittings are correct, however my rear light/licence plate holder has a 4 bolt fixing (two top and two bottom) whereas this piece only has three.   I'm assuming its still for a 550, but perhaps a different model with a different rear light bracket set up. I could drill it to suit of course but that would probably damage the chrome. Does anyone know which bike its off?

Their sales speak for themselves, if they were that bad no one would buy them.  For the home mechanic doing oil changes, valve clearances and the like I think they are adequate.  Perhaps if you are doing a total engine strip down and rebuild you might want to consider something more comprehensive.

But it does handle quite a lot better than I expected through the twisty bits. The combination of light weight, modern rubber and modest power means I can drive it out of a bend like a 250 and that's more fun, considering both our ages, 8) than it has any right to be! :D

As long as you enjoy it, thats all that matters.  :)

I think you've answered your own question. The older stuff isn't as quick as we remember from the 70's.  Old age, rose tinted glasses and (as you've mentioned) a fuel injected more modern bike/s all combine to make them feel a bit antiquated, but just enjoy the scenery.

Where's My Old Bike? / MBT728T Honda CB750 F2
« on: July 27, 2020, 03:14:54 PM »
Well, as I alluded to elsewhere, a sift through some old photos revealed my first CB750 F2 was registered as MBT728T.   Sadly from what I can tell, it hasn't been taxed since 1989, so has probably gone to the scrap yard years ago, but you never know.   I do recall I sold it in part exchange for my Honda CBX at Eddys on Kirkstall Road in Leeds.

The photo is during a trip to the Lake District, I guess in 1978 or early 1979.

Does anyone have any more up to date info on it?

Ha ha ,One thing (on this rainy afternoon) this thread has done is to get me to look through some old photos and I've got one of my first 750 F2 showing the reg!   Rather than hi-jack this thread further I'll start a new one. Lol

If they didn’t remember the reg no they would hardly be able to put it in the “find my bike” section 😉

That's why I can't find my two 750's.  On a different thread I put the reg of my CBX-6 cos I have old pictures of it showing the number, but I think that and the RD200 are the only bike Reg numbers I recall from over 40 bikes I've owned.  I might be able to get a few others off old photos too perhaps.

My point was if more people (like me) could remember their old reg numbers, there might be a lot more posts in the 'Where's my old bike' thread, and therefore  might there be the opportunity of more original owners being re-united with their former steeds?

Who was the York dealer at the top of the A1079 Hull road who had bikes in an upstairs showroom?

Russells had the shop I think you are referring to.  That's where I got my RD200 from.  It was a family business and they had a large push bike shop too in the centre of town near the fire station.

Another explanation might be they don't remember the Reg number!  I had two 750 F2's and I can't recall the reg of either bike.   :-[  To be honest, I struggle to remember the Reg numbers of the ones I have in the garage now!   Ain't old age a bugger.

Ash is right DN in the reg was always a York plate.  One I do remember is my first road bike when I was 17 an RD200 Yamaha ODN493P.  You might be right that it first came from Alan Mountains Ash, but don't forget Shearsmiths on Blossom street sold Hondas too.

Cheers Dave,

Regarding the regulator/rectifier issues, I've read if you fit a heat sink and a cooling fan that helps, but it seems to me that's a lot of work and possibly expense to cure something thats overheating.   When you replaced yours did you go for a straight OE item or is there an uprated reg/rec available? Is it possible to relocate it to a place where it receives more airflow to keep it cool?

According to the records, its not been taxed since 1993 and its changed colour.  It was Silver when I owned it, its recorded as Red now.  Thats if it still exists  :(
has anyone come across it or own it?
