Absolutely nothing wrong in asking questions, and this forum is up there with the best in providing helpful and knowledgeable answers. But, I do wonder how I used to manage before the internet. These days, I seem to spend a lot of my time checking and rechecking how to do things I used to do without thinking when I was younger. So, I think, for me the answer to the question "How did stuff get so difficult?" is, I just got older.

Did my engine in the barbecue this week.
What does it taste like?
WD40. Love the taste. Who needs olive oil.

I ride my KLX 250 throughout the winter (Thruxton R for the summer). I’ve got the Chinese grips fitted and also have a pair of RST battery powered heated gloves so palms and back of hands stay warm. Now, if only I could find a way to stop my visor icing up!

I agree with everyone who has said the cheap (£10) Chinese grips are better than the Oxford version. They also look much better when fitted as they don't have the big control panel fitted on a poor quality bracket like the Oxford ones.

Thanks Oddjob.
I’ve put it on the ever increasing shopping list. The oil guide is not available via CMSNL or DSS but there are a couple on eBay from Germany - £32 + £16 postage!! I’ll check mine out to see if the damage is in a critical position. If not, I’ll try some super glue.

Just an update on some limited progress made since my last post.
Rebored cylinder block picked up from Bryan. Great job done and I got the benefit of picking Bryan’s brain for half an hour - priceless. He also took a look at the crank, shells and cam chain tensioner and confirmed they were ok to reuse. Thanks again Bryan.
I bought the bike without a log book. The process of getting a new V5C was fairly straightforward. I filled in DVLA form V62 with my details together with the frame and registration numbers and sent it off with a cheque for £25. I got an acknowledgement from DVLA a couple of days later saying that my application should be processed on 01st October and a V5C issued within a few days. Got the log book through the post on 5th Oct so no complaints there. Next step will be to get it SORN’d.
I’ve cleaned up the casings etc ready for painting with VHT paint but just have to wait until my wife goes out so I can use the parts washer for the final clean. For some reason, she seems to think that just because it’s fitted in the kitchen it should only be used for dishes! Once the cases were apart I could see the damage that the primary chain had caused by chewing into the casing. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
Splines on kickstart spindle also stripped so have ordered a used replacement from eBay [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
Have dual purposed my bike lift as an engine stand using a length of rebar and some threaded bar. I was afraid to use my work bench in case the engine got lost amongst all the other stuff. [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
The four gearbox bearings look, feel and sound ok to me, so given the high cost of replacements I am considering reusing them or is this false economy? The clock shows that the bike had done 47k miles but I have no way of knowing if this is accurate. Any views/advice on this would be welcome.
Thanks Charlie

Don't know if this helps but on the US SOHC forum lots of people seem to coat the inside of the casings with a product called Glyptal for sealing porous aluminium castings. Haven't seen it mentioned on this forum though.

Just another point in degreasers. I soaked a sump pan overnight in Screwfix No Nonsense degreaser. The aluminium turned black and it took a lot of sanding to get back to its original colour. I won’t make that mistake again.

Many moons ago I used both trichloroethylene and methylene chloride (dichloromethane) as heavy duty solvents in the laboratory testing of bituminous materials. In the early days the stuff was splashed around everywhere but in latter years its use was strictly controlled within fume cupboards and the labs fitted with Draeger meters to measure the concentration in the atmosphere. I believe both solvents are now classified as carcinogens. Nasty stuff if not handled properly but great for parts cleaning, paint stripping etc.

Thanks a lot, It is VHT Cast Aluminium paint - https://www.frost.co.uk/vht-cast-aluminium-engine-enamel-high-temperature-paint-312ml/ It probably isnt the same as the original Honda finish but I like the colour and finish and it is easy to apply. Used it before and it is holding up really well on my GL1000, Ken
Paint looks really good. Can I ask whether you had to use a primer? Thanks Charlie
