CB750 / Re: CWC outer spokes too short on bend.
« on: May 18, 2021, 08:55:12 AM »
I take it that when you recieved the spokes they were in two sets - inners and outers ? They should be different.
Stating the obvious, but if all else fails, check the obvious.

Just looked at my CB550 :
It  has Tagasako rims and S/S spokes fitted by a previous owner. Built by  - unknown. On the rear wheel  the outers are flush with the alloy drum flange and run straight, the inners run off the hub towards the centre of the wheel. Excellent.

At the front I was surprised to see the outers on the disc hub have a curve on them !, pulled tight towards the centre of the rim and hard against the flange . Worse, there is 3mm of thread showing on the outers too.  That's going to annoy me now !
Keep at it
Regards, Terry.

I sometimes find the angle of the spoke head will change the 'lay' of the spoke. Is it possible, if you made the angle slightly bigger, the spoke would lay against the hub better and let it 'ride up' in the hole . That also gives a slight increase in the reach (lengthwise) of the spoke.
A judgement on that can be made by looking at how nicely the spoke head fits in its recess in the hub.

I make all my spokes up from blanks which all came with 90deg ends. A simple jig allows me to bend the ends to suit the hub for the correct lay.  ( this includes the use of a hammer ! ).
Considering the response from CWC, it may end up the only way !   Sod paying them anymore.

The Triumph T150 I bought last year had newly built wheels by North East wheels up Newcastle way. Superbly done, straight spokes, good fit on the hubs , no threads showing. I have the receipt, glad I did'nt pay that bill !!!

Took the advice and tried our local Honda main agent in Hull. One on its' way for just over a fiver including vat.  Why did'nt I think of that ?
Too used to hearing  " obsolete, no longer listed etc. "

I looked at Silvers and other places that had repro caps for sale but they did'nt appear to have the seal in them.
Sorted.

CB500/550 / Master cylinder cap seal
« on: May 13, 2021, 05:11:32 PM »
Now I'm fully on the road, batting around has created small water splashes on the newly painted fuel tank. Thought nothing of it, wiped it off, it happened again even on these  dry days. Suspected fuel cap leak but it did'nt flash off like petrol. Finally realised it was brake fluid that has marked the new paint.
The nylon seal in the cap is breaking up with old age. Just tried CSML, 4  euro for the seal, 23.40 final price delivered !
Bo***ocks to that !
Are they available in the UK anyone ?,  not shown on David Silvers, just a new cap with no seal.
Regards, Terry.

Seabeaowner uses the correct terminology for dwell, %, not degrees, I've said degrees from the year dot, no idea why !

50% is the way to go for a points gap of .015."

I've had old Fords that have the points at .025", dwell for them around 40% I seem to remember.

A bit of discussion is good education, great forum this one.

Strange differences indeed !       Most 4 cylinder cars  with a standard  .012" to .015" points gap are set around 50 deg dwell.  I  have used my old 4 cyl dwell meter on a few 4 cyl hondas' and 25 on the 4 cyl scale is 50 on the bike. That's a good figure for spark production and always works a treat. My 550f is set at that and I'm very happy with the performance

Always interesting to hear what others are doing though.

Did you make a note of the dwell angle he settled on ?   If the bike now goes that well, check the dwell and record it for future use !

To have all that thread showing is not good. As you say, there cannot be much thread engagement. See if you can find the official factory lengths, angles  etc and compare with what they sent and the ones you removed.
Spokes have to be right.
Keep checking, is it possible they sent the wrong set as happened to nurse Julie ?

That's pretty poor, the spoke will be under a bending force itself , on the straight and on the engage bend, plus , a small  bending force on the drum flange.  If CWC is a responsible seller they will replace them without issue . Let us know what they say, flannel is not good enough when it comes to wheel building.

You beat me !, I was just about to say get both points set  with, hopefully, the plate in the middle of its' marks.  Then strobe 1&4 first.
I have a vague recollection, possibly from my CB750 days, that certain makes of points are gits to set. Maybe someone else is aware of that.

Something did beat me, the brown and brown/white wires. I could'nt  find anyway of having the park position on the key separate from the side lights. Whatever I tried, one puts the other on 'cause it's the same bulb s !
In the end, I gave in and omitted the park facility. I'm not going to leave it anywhere at night with the lights on anyway.
If someone has a solution, I will gladly accept how thick I can be !

Looks like no 3 exhaust is bluing up. Don't like that,  and are'nt they double skinned to avoid bluing - or is that a different bike I'm thinking of ?

Looks very nice though, surely going to go for more than £3500 ?

Thanks to help from two forum members, I've now got the ignition switch plugged in again. The wiring was a shambles, wrong headlight, no side light, no front stop switch wires and , eventually, confused by a Br/W  that was broken internally and a soldered loom internal black wire that had parted. Rear indicators refusing to work finally tracked down to the earth wires on the frame holders not contacting 'cause of corrosion of the ally rivets holding the wires on.
Phew !
Hope that's it, soon back on the road !

Regards, Terry.

« on: May 06, 2021, 01:25:46 PM »
To sort the mess that is my CB550f wiring loom, I recently bought the full range of harness colours from Ilkeston wiring products. Easy to deal with and I don't have a problem with their prices.
They have a big range of terminals too, including the smaller Japanese type.
Regards, Terry.
