CB500/550 / Re: Strange cam chain guide shape

Hadn't realised how flat they are meant to be, but I did fit a new one some years ago. Both those shown above have UP on the back. And both came out very bent, but in different directions.

I presume that the spacing between the pins is slightly greater than than the spacing in the engine block and that it should bow out at the centre against the chain when all bolted down. This one must have somehow bowed in the reverse direction. As I say I believe it is as it left the factory, but it's nearing end of production in 78 and maybe assembly was not by their best workers.
The very worn one of the 500 shows no contact at all at the bottom 5mm and thought of bending the one off the 550 the same way, but the overall surface also has deep cracks.

CB500/550 / Strange cam chain guide shape
« on: December 06, 2016, 03:37:21 PM »
Just stripping the top end off my 550K. The front cam chain guide does not look good at all. It appears bent to do the most damage to the chain. At the lower end it points forward and is worn through to the metal for the first 4mm. Along the middle section where the chain would normally contact the surface is mostly rough but not worn down. Any ides what caused this?
The actual tensioner blade at the rear shows very little wear at all. So at least it is cheaper than replacing this. (unless anyone has a spare?)
The bike shows just over 20k miles and am pretty sure never been apart.
Pictures show an old worn guide from a CB500 at top and the guide from the 550K at the bottom.

The green clocks fitted to the F1 had the trip counter above the odometer with the reset at the back didn't they and blue clock fitted to the K3 it was back below the odometer. Incidentally the blue when faded and in poor light can look green to some.
Feel shamed entering the anorak conversation now. Must be too much time indoors!

CB500/550 / Re: 500/550 Pinned Rocker Shafts + a rebore question
« on: November 14, 2016, 09:14:16 AM »
Thanks for that Mathew. I'm also a bit suspicious of the mod as it did not appear before a long way through production and never remember it at the time. Perhaps it was a problem that affected a particular batch and the thought they should do something to restore confidence. The official Honda bulletin of course says that you have to replace the cover with a new one. I think the shafts were locked in place on the 350/400s but by a different method.
And on the bore question I could feel a line at the top where the top compression ring would reach at TDC. A loose ring above this gave a gap of about .012" and at about midway on the bore it was not much different. But when positioned a little way down from the top the gap increased to 0.027" Tried moving the ring around axially to do it a few times, but always same result. The feel at the top of the bore was the giveaway.

CB500/550 / 500/550 Pinned Rocker Shafts + a rebore question
« on: November 12, 2016, 11:47:40 AM »
I notice on my 550k that it has pinned rocker shafts. Apparently introduced after premature wear of the cylinder head cover. Strange that it only became apparent after quite a few years on manufacture of the 500/550s so may have arisen for other issues at that time.
As I have a spare cover my question is, is it really necessary and has anyone tried modifying an old cover and shafts to stop the them moving?

And while I'm here and it's ***** outside. Just measured up my spare cb500 block by positioning a ring at various points and checking gap. To sum up the bores are fine over the whole length except the final top 6-8mm of the stroke and then goes out to what I calculate as top just over the top limit 56.1. Is that normal, but presume that it's rebore time?
Thanks all

The headstock on mine are actually stamped CB550K and CB550F before the frame nos. Both are US imports though.

Ash, took that onboard. It was marked as "Quality Guaranteed, CE / FCC / ROHS" with copies of certifications on their site. (genuine??) China made, but distributed from UK. They asked me to inspect the main board for them before I finally returned it and it actually looked very neat and good quality.

Ok, I didn't get the ultrasonic that is on the first post of this thread, but a very similar 2L version (fleabay) with a heater. It lasted about 30 minutes in two 15 minute stints before the sound and the cleaning action dropped right off. Carried on and finished the carbs on one bike with very slow progress. But have sent it back at my expense. Any similar experiences or recommendations?

Times change. In the 70s it was always how it went, now it's how it looks.

As far as I can see they are the same. Measuring inside the triangle. Front tube: 33cm, Back tube 37cm, Top tube: 31cm.
Just make sure he is talking about the classic CB500 four and not the more modern Honda CB500 twins.

Maybe someone already let you know or you found out anyway. Mine has "UP" written on the back. So it's short end up.
