You need to do it. See 2nd post from csd4t earlier in this topic.

Sent mine there too, that's the address they give on their Year of Manufacture web page.

Thanks for the comment Oddjob. If I'd realised that I would maybe have tried again, you live and learn ....
I think I have seen other comments elsewhere about poor service from Honda regarding this sort of enquiry.
In the end I figured that if 400/4s were made from 1975 - 77 then as mine is late in the production run (from
engine and frame numbers) it must be a 77 bike. Put all the information in a letter to the VJMC Dating Service and
got a Dating Letter back which DVLA accepted. Year of manufacture is now recorded by DVLA as 1977, much better
than 1981 as it was shown when I got the bike and hopefully will save me four years of road tax.

'Exempt' is something of a misnomer.
You still have to have road tax, it just costs zero.
Of course at zero rate you may as well tax the bike for 12 months of the year rather than maybe
tax for 6 months then SORN it for the other six.

This is the page on the Honda web site with the information:
http://bikes.honda.co.uk/motorcycles/my-bike/year-of-manufacture.html
Even though as far as I can tell my 400/4 is a UK bike I just got a letter saying they were unable to identify my motorcycle
from their archives or computer systems, and return of cheque (£30 is correct). Took about 3 weeks from me sending the letter
to receiving their response.

Roy, I seem to remember a thread on here that said dvla will ONLY accept dating evidence from Honda thenselves, someone will hopefully be able to post a link to the thread.
As per my earlier post DVLA accepted a dating letter from VJMC for my bike. Honda UK were unable to (or wouldn't) help, this was also stated in the VJMC letter.
Should save me 4 years of road tax so I think worth the effort.

This is the link to the document describing the rolling 40 year exemption for anyone interested:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/293910/TIIN_2507_8011_40_year_rolling_exemption_for_classic_vehicles_.pdf

I went through the process with my 400/4 earlier this year. For reasons unknown it wasn't registered until 1981, year of manufacture
(not on the V5C but shown on a GOV.UK Vehicle Enquiry, https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/) was also shown as 1981. I got a
Dating Letter from VJMC showing year of manufacture as 1977, DVLA took about 5 weeks to send me a new V5C with a new age-related
registration number.

Not sure how you can get a refund, only way I can see would be to SORN the bike (which I think would qualify you for a refund) then re-tax.

Thanks for the hose clip suggestion - that sounds a good tip.
I have another tacho which had obviously been opened in the past without using this trick and the band had spread outwards.
Can't find one large enough in my garage so have ordered a cheap one one from eBay.
Also have got some Isopropyl Alcohol which will hopefully do the cleaning job, have silicone grease already if needed.

Clocks look good in white. I'm guessing the tacho is off something like a G5 with the idiot lights and 9200 red line (400 is at 10000).
No idea what lubricant to use, maybe a light machine oil but sparingly.
Not even sure what alcohol, haven't really looked at what is available yet.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Cable has already been replaced so it isn't that.
Symptoms are the same when spinning the tacho with an electric drill (running in reverse as that's the direction the cable turns) so problem is with tacho.
I read of someone who dismantled a tacho and cleaned the workings with alcohol. Might give that a try, a new skill to learn.

CB350/400 / Tacho Full of Treacle
« on: March 27, 2015, 11:52:19 AM »
My 400/4 had not had much use for a long while before I bought it.
Have got it running but tacho behaves as if it is full of treacle - very sluggish in movement.
I'm guessing whatever lubricant is in it may have hardened with age and/or lack of use.
Any thoughts as to whether this may improve with use or anything I could do to improve the situation.
Alternatively if a refurb may be necessary any suggestions for someone to do it who wouldn't charge the earth.
Thanks.

CB350/400 / Re: Getting back to Bikes !! RFL
« on: March 20, 2015, 09:18:54 AM »
Hi All
I've just had RFL reminder through for my 400, its 58 squids, is that right?. It's more than I pay for the bloody bike insurance which is Fully Comp any bike any size. When does the classic excemption come in ?  >:( >:(
Back at the original query (!) this document explains the VED / RFL exemption stuff:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/293910/TIIN_2507_8011_40_year_rolling_exemption_for_classic_vehicles_.pdf
My 400/4 (a late F2, appears to be a UK model) was for some reason not registered until 1981, although as far as I can find out they were only manufactured from 1975-77.
Year of manufacture from a GOV.UK Vehicle Enquiry was also shown as 1981.
I have just been through the process of getting this changed to 1977 with the help of a dating letter from the VJMC (Honda UK were no help).
So hopefully, as the exemption is supposedly based on year of manufacture, I should qualify a bit sooner.

Drew,
I have a starter motor that came with a load of spares I bought. I can have a look tomorrow and see if it seems any good if that would help.

Tom is absolutely right. Side panels weren't on the bike when I did the other photos so didn't notice that one!
Here is a shot of it.
