And after all that they buggered off and left their rides just laying on the floor. :)

CB500/550 / Re: NEED TO TALK ABOUT TANGS 😀😀
« on: April 08, 2019, 05:52:31 PM »
I have never seen tangs with curves, only straight, i had a problem with leaky valves on the 350, so i used metal polish on the needles and seats, to do the seat i put polish on a cocktail stick and spun it to and fro using a slight pressure, and the needles a mounted in a biro tube and made a small hole in a piece of stiff card and spun the needle to and fro using a little pressure again, i also found that at the right levels  the floats would touch the roof of the carbs and let by, so i set the floats 1mm lower, the bike ran perfect after that, i have now recently sold it and promised myself another 350f at a later date.

« on: April 04, 2019, 04:36:15 PM »
Can someone clarify the 40 year rule for me. I have a bike coming up to 40 in June this year. Normally I wait for the date to actually arrive before changing the V5 to Historic Vehicle, but someone on here mentioned you can do it any time in that year from January 1st. Can anybody say that is the rule, and has anyone been successful doing it before the actual date. Cheers.

get a dating letter from Honda, the rule is date of manufacture ,and it could  have been in stock for ages before registering
Even then you may only get year of manufacture, the best you can do is month when you have a headstock sticker, and that don't wash with the powers that be, and by the time you have paid for the dating documents you may as well pay the tax and get on with it.

Okay thanks guys. Another bloody year to wait and two for the 750. Guess I had better book an MOT.

I will continue with MOT's on my bikes, regardless of how well we look after them a second pair of eyes can only be a good thing, and yes we know an MOT is really only good on the moment of issue.

You won't be able to do it until 1st of April 2020, a 79 bike is not eligible until them, so in some cases the vehicles actually end up being 41 years and 3 months old. I applied for historic for my 1978 bikes in Jan this year only to have forms sent back saying it can't be done until April 1st.

Remember when garage forecourts had Redex and 2stroke oil dispensers on them.  :)

Yep.

I had a Raleigh Runabout 50cc when I was 16 (1974)
Petrol was 10/- a gallon and you added your own 2 Stroke oil from the squirter thing on the forecourt.

I had a Raleigh Runabout and a Wisp at about the same time, i was about 12, then i got a 56/57 Lambretta ld125, they all got thrashed to death, and they all had the same 20 to 1 mix from the Total garage at the end of our street, my sister worked there so sometime s it was cheaper than 10/- a gallon.

Wouldn't making the tank itself the sacrificial anode ultimately weaken the tank?
Only if you plate out too long or the tank is done in to start with also the rust is already weakening the tank, what you are doing is taking the crap away from the tank and depositing it on the cathode, in the industry you clean using hot solvent or caustic based solutions and then it's D.I rinsed, then pickled with a 5/10% sulphuric acid rinsed again with D.I then plate up, timings are crucial, this is just a brief look at the process, naturally with tanks after the final rinse you need to dry it out quick and put protective coatings inside.

It's a frequent occurrence with a lot of old carbs where the valve is brass to brass, could be sticky needle or a tiny bit of rubbish, and as you found once up and running it clears itself.

Well Matt, either kev’s right and everybody else who uses this technique is wrong and it doesn’t work....or its the other way round... you decide  :)
Its not about right or wrong, its  about correctly, i done this stuff for a living not as part of a hobby and that's where the difference lies, i offer suggestions based on what you might have kicking around in shed, i will also let you know the correct way it's done, but ultimately i don't have rusty tanks in any of my vehicles.
