Other Bikes / Honda VFR800 Pre V Tech

I'm looking at the above with a view to getting one as a winter hack bike.  I actually owned one myself about 15 years ago and I recall it was a great all rounder and relatively bulletproof in most areas, but none of them are getting any younger (just like our beloved SOHC models) so I was wondering if anyone who has one now and has perhaps owned it for several years can give me any pointers?  I know the exhaust collector is a rusting point and hence possible problem area, but is there anything else I should be looking for specifically on these bikes?  Someone mentioned rectifiers as another potential weak spot.  Thanks

Nice looking bike Bob.  I've always had a soft spot for the 750 F2, it was my first introduction to 'big bike' riding in 1978.

I've got one for it, but I haven't got it fitted.

On the subject of drilled discs, I've had this lurking in my shed since I first got my 550.  I've never had it fitted on my bike, so I can't comment on its effectiveness or otherwise, but it seems straight enough and its about 7mm thick on average.   If anyone wants it, how does a tenner plus carriage sound?

I know some people don't like them but I renewed with Carole Nash this year for my 550.  Just £45, about a tenner cheaper than last year.

All mine of that era were plastic, pre 1973 bikes (and cars) could have the black silver type back then, but I believe you can now fit them to any vehicle registered as Historic, i.e more than 40 years old.

oh, and if it squeals, that's good!  Mine seems to be working best when it's noisy.  When it goes quiet, it's time to adjust.

Mine's just started squealing.  Perhaps its getting better.   ;)

I'll third it!    I've changed the brake fluid, lubed the pivot and checked the piston for free movement.  Short of experimenting with different pad material theres not much you can do.

I had issues with getting my bike into the Historic class, but it wasn't the Post Office that was the problem, it was a jobs worth at DVLA.

Out & About / Re: First trip to Squires Cafe - movie

Nice vid.   I've heard the coffee is as crap as ever there though.
I like the coffee from squires  :) although some of the chipped mugs could do with replacing...

It was OK when the old Squires in Sherburn itself was on the go back in the 70's, but you are the 1st person I've heard who says they like the coffee they offer now.  I used to live in Selby, so it was regular haunt for me back then, but since I moved to the coast I find Seaways at Fridaythorpe to be a much nicer place for food and drink. Obviously it's much closer for me too.  I do agree though, Squires is a great place to just go and look around at the bikes that turn up.
