CB500/550 / Re: Black Fouled Plugs

I'd be inclined to check the previously mentioned air filter restriction (under seat inlet). For it to happen suddenly is unusual for an air filter to suddenly get clogged - but its pointing to that area as all 4 cylinders affected.
Only other common part to all 4 cylinder (although obviously timed differently) is CDI - I don't know anything about the workings of those but maybe another forum member could advise if the CDI could affect all 4 cyclinders at once
No SOHC four (except CB650) came with CDI, they had points and condensers. Highly unlikely to be an ignition related fault on all 4 cylinders. As previously suggested the sudden occurrence points to restricted air intake or sticking choke flaps.

I have seen loads of them in my workshop  :o
And you've done some very nice tidy repair jobs on them!

All very well, but somebody needs to explain to the medical profession that high oil pressure is GOOD, not something to be criticized!

Misc / Open / Re: The Covid Thread
« on: January 21, 2021, 11:28:57 AM »
It's worrying whatever way you look at it. People spouting conspiracy theories that it's 5G phone masts causing it, or it's governments trying to force totalitarian control over the people etc. My father in law went into hospital 22nd Dec with heart issues, came out on 27th Dec. 6th Jan same issues arise again, back into hospital, 4 days later mother in law gets a call from the hospital telling her he has caught covid from a member of staff at the hospital, last week he got worse so was put on a ventilator, and died Tuesday morning. My concern is how did this happen in a specialist hospital like Addenbrookes? Mrs Hairy wants to go be with her mum, but can't, and although she can go to the funeral when they  get a date, she can't go in her mum's house, let alone stay there, meaning she has to drive from Devon to Cambridge, attend a funeral, then drive back in one day!
So stay safe out there people. One thing though, whoever thought you would be more likely to be killed as a result of standing to close to someone as opposed to riding a motorcycle?

Steve W, had similar thing happen to me, they took the clips out while still in hospital about 12 days after surgery, and a large portion of the incision sprang open, leaving  2 sections open, one 4 inches (10cm)long then a bit further down another 2.5 inches (7cm) both open by 2inches (5cm) wide and 2 inches (5cm) deep. Looked quite grotesque, so they put a vacuum dressing on it, which is basically stuffing the wound with sterile gauze then applying a sheet of sticky plastic film over it, with a vacuum pump attached to it sucking out air and slowly pulling the wound together. Was sent home like that a couple of days later, with a portable vacuum pump about the size of a woman's shoulder bag. Then had district nurses visit every day to clean the wound and change dressings for 12 weeks. I won't put photos of it on here as it's Sunday morning, don't want people heaving up their breakfast!

You bought it as a non runner. I guess you haven't done a compression test? If you have, what were the readings on cylinder 1? I hate to be the harbinger of doom, but if you bought it as a non runner there are so many things it could be. Damaged/ bent or siezed valve, holed piston, knackered rings/ bore. So first thing, get that plug out and and hold your finger over the plug hole while winding it over or kicking it over with throttles wide open. If it doesn't blow your finger of the hole, it's going to need further investigation.

CB750 / Re: Dragging clutch
« on: January 02, 2021, 12:52:56 PM »
Well, what leaps out at me are the friction plates. In every F1 I have ever done the clutch on, only the outermost plate has the tangential slots on it, all other plates had conventional slots. There should also be a double thickness metal plate in there as well, basically 2 rivetted together. I can't say for certain if all the fibre plates having tangential slots is the cause of your issue, but I've never seen it like that before. Also, with a 40+year old bike, there is always the risk of things being incorrectly assembled by a previous owner, so replacing something exactly the way you found it can also be fraught with problems. It may even be the reason it was parked up years ago, something incorrectly assembled and the owner got fed up with it!

NOTICE OF MY INTENTION TO LEAVE THE GROUP!
It may or may not be disappointing to some people to know that I have decided to leave this page, I am sick and tired of the constant criticisms and  remarks about things that have nothing to do with anyone else but me. I am disappointed in several  members....
Okay... So I like dressing-up in rubber clothes. So what? And, my culinary tastes might seem strange to some people... but I have a particular liking for cucumbers. Which brings me to the matter of my sexual preferences, which I know might seem strange to some people, but group sex with dwarfs, adult little people, and pygmies is only a ‘small’ perversion compared to the other matter... And the magistrate was particularly understanding when I explained that running naked through our local park wearing crotchless fluffy underwear on my head and brandishing a dildo in each hand is an ancient pagan custom and...
Oh shit ! Wrong group!
Please ignore all of the above.
Happy New Year

Think we all need a bit of cheering up

I bet no one would want to be CX500 rank..
You'd be surprised, Trigger loves them! But we can't have a C.B.X. granted it's an awesome bit of kit, but it's NOT a single cam, which is what the forums about!

You could try running a separate live to the positive side of the coils to eliminate the possibility of excessive resistance in the wiring. As standard the Live goes from battery to ignition switch, through the kill switch then to the coils. That involves a lot of places where poor or dirty connections are possible, which can seriously affect the coils performance

Anorak's Corner / Re: New DVLA rules on black & white No plates
« on: December 13, 2020, 10:15:51 AM »
They should never have changed it in the first place, as number plates were part of the construction and use laws. I still find the sight of black and silver plates on post 73 bikes repulsive, they were never like it new, and should not be now. This revision is just a quick "patch" on the problem. It would be far more sensible to return to the "yellow on the rear on ANY post 73 vehicle" and why not? Before people jump in about cost, you no longer have the annual M.O.T. cost, so buy one from the money saved there!

Do the engine case screws look right or as if they have been out.
The fact Trig pointed out about the kickstart being a spline or two out of position probably means the clutch cover has been off to free up the plates at the very least, so what else has been messed with is anybody's guess. When Honda UK stored it away it was "just an old model" at the time, probably why it wasn't stored better.

I think many people expect far too much from a pair of 62cc pistons performance wise. That is the later 12bhp restricted motor, but like the earlier 17bhp pre restricted version, they need revs to get moving any sense. Gutless below 8,000rpm really, they need winding right to the redline in each gear to maintain any sort of pace. Just remember that before spending many hours and heaps of cash trying to find performance that was never there new. Best thing is to find someone with one who can give you a comparison.
