Other Bikes / Re: CB900FZ DOHC smoking and spitting...

..Warning, putting two stroke mixed petrol into a four stroke can cause serious overheating because the ratio of petrol to air is greatly reduced causing the engine to run very hot.

I seized my four stroke lawn mower by running it on my chain saw petrol.  It's a 40 min round trip to get petrol here and I thought it would be ok just once to finish off the grass cutting.  I wrongly assumed it would just smoke a bit.  Luckily, once it cooled down it was ok.  I wouldn't like to treat my bike like that though.

At least you know what it is now.

Where's My Old Bike? / Re: Honda CB125S
« on: June 21, 2010, 09:05:28 AM »
I too rode various CB125S models.  Great bike, taught me how to rebuild engines.  On one occasion, a gearbox gear lost so many teeth it vibrated like the whole machine was going to blow itself apart, so, the night before my part one bike test, I had to strip and rebuild the thing.  I stayed up all night and had the thing going the next morning in time for my test, which I passed.  I can't do without sleep anymore.

Best road-bike I have ridden in the snow.  (CX500 worst)

Looks wonderful!  A lived in look that cannot be created overnight; it takes years to develop.  I'll try to get a picture of mine up, it's in a similar lived-in condition and I refuse to polish and standardise things.

In my opinion I have vastly improved upon what Mr Honda produced.  It now has a better exhaust (1980's laser) and air filter system, which has made space for a toolkit to go where the over-sized and stifling air box used to be.  The cow-horn handlebars have improved cornering and riding position and the removal of indicators has improved aerodynamics.

...forgot to add, why use paint when you can so easily apply grease or rub over with an oily rag?

Hooray, another rat-bike.  I have a terribly tatty 500/4 which has been my daily ride for the last 15 years, rain or shine.  These bikes are perfectly good for normal use if regularly maintained.  The newest bike I've ever ridden was a 1979 CX500 so it feels perfectly modern to me.  After all, it has an alternator, automatic advance and retard, disc brakes, telescopic front forks, electric lights, in fact all the modern trappings  :)

Welcome.

Steve

I aggree with Steve, you need to measure to know for sure.  In the absence of a tester, put your thumb over the plug hole as you or an assistant (easier) turns the engine over.  It will at least give you an idea about what is going on.

I find these new pneumatic tyres are such a boon and a terrific improvement on the old solid type.  Having experienced the joys of pneumatic motoring I don't think I shall ever look back.

I now have a new tyre and inner tube fitted to my motor bicycle, and tyre garage kindly included air for free!  I bet none of you can top that for a bargain.

Scary.

Do you put 42lbs in your tyres?  I usualy run at 28 front and 32 rear unless I have a passenger in which case I put the rear up to 34.

Perhaps I should start a different thread?

I was out on the bike yesterday and as I went into a corner it felt a bit strange and stodgy.  I thought I would stop and check the bike even though the stodginess was very subtle and I had no idea how it was caused.  As I came to a stop I realised what was wrong,  there was virtually no air left in the front tyre and seconds later it was completely flat and off the rim.

I'm sure you've all had this before but I was just very glad I listened to myself instead of pressing on and have it go completely flat at speed.  If something feels wrong, it probably is.

Great stuff, not mad at all.

My bike looked as bad as that and now fifteen years later it still does :), almost, the only difference is it works now!

welcome.  Looks great to me, not much to do.  Apart from the oxidisation on the engine it looks in better condition than my 500/4 and I use that daily.

no, it is a pain to line it all up, trial and error usually sorts it.  Once it's together I found that if I ever need to take it off do so in one piece.

That bike is looking good and I'm glad to hear it's back on the road.  It's excellent to see another natural and functional looking bike.  I have found that a liberal coat of old engine oil or grease keeps things looking good and keeps the harmful kind of rust at bay.  Also,  it is worth painting the insides of your mudguards with hammerite.
