Misc / Open / Re: Winter Project
« on: January 17, 2016, 12:18:26 PM »
Yes, I've seen lots of ads for 'ideal winter project'  I think making a big fallen tree (not many of those in Orkney) fit our wood burner by chopping wood might be my idea of such a project.  I wonder if the ads marked 'unfinished project' are caused by the first ads.  That said, I am doing a few jobs in the Workshop and have just successfully stopped a myriad small air leaks on my compressor as I got fed up with it starting up so often and even turned over the disc valves for another 40 years abuse - should see me out!

Other Bikes / Re: Classic Triumph Twins
« on: January 11, 2016, 11:15:46 AM »
Hi Roy,
You could give Fred Wilson a call, he used to run Jacksons of Chorley.  He is a Triumph Guru and has many Meriden factory tools for Triumph twins.  Now does 'Rebores in Lancashire' from home in Whittle-le-Woods area, not too far from you.  Probably can't supply an engine but may know 'a man who can' as he has stacks of useful contacts.
Not sure if he knows I moved to Orkney but tell him I asked after him, he's a great guy, hope his Harrison lathe is still working well, he's on 01257 264151,

Misc / Open / Re: Back in 1983 .... where is Eric?
« on: January 11, 2016, 09:13:20 AM »
Seems like a possibility that it's the same Eric, certainly the pic of the MD of Knutsford Honda looks like him, perhaps a little more rounded 🤓 Even the showroom looks like an improved and extended version of how I remember it.  It was on the left side of the road from the M6 towards Tatton Park just after you have crossed over the M56, A556 I think.
I remember him doing an 'end over end' on his own nearly new GL 1500.  When he was starting up with Custom Accessories he operated from his own garage for a while and used to invite Cheshire Wings and our crowd from Lancs and Lakes Wings to go and buy tinsel (not for me though, I prefer mine standard)
I remember other bikes in his garage, but paid little or no attention to them, except to notice they were immaculate - perhaps one was a sandcast?

Hi,
I knew a guy called Eric Warburton back in the late 1980's. By that time this one had a GoldWing shop in Cheshire called Custom Accessories, which he ran with his Wife, originally from home, then later in a posh building.  Could this be the guy you are looking for?
I'm still into Wings as well as all the other Honda stuff and still have contacts down in that area who might be able to throw some more light.

Project Board / Re: Billet fork tops and parts
« on: January 10, 2016, 01:34:30 PM »
Just found the part in the 400/4 parts list described correctly, unlike Haynes, as 'piece, oil lock' with part number
51432-369-000. Is that your part number?

Checked my early 350/4 parts list and they are a different setup, apologies to anyone if I misled you by saying 350 and 400 are the same - they ain't.

Ian

Just found your part number for GL1000
51432-371-003
So they are different size but similar in appearance

Hi Keith,
Just looking at my Haynes manual for 75 to 79 GL1000, I can't see a part labelled 'oil lock' but being a Haynes that doesn't mean anything!  Are you referring to the alloy sleeve with a taper at one end that the damper tube fits into?  Can you take a pic of tother one as I have a suspicion it's fitted to other forks too, including 350 and 400 fours.  I certainly have a spare for those if they are the same size.  Alternatively I could knock one up on the lathe if you supply accurate dimensions.

CB350/400 / Re: CB350/4 Countershaft bearing.
« on: January 08, 2016, 09:24:34 PM »
You are more than welcome Nigel, that's what this forum is all about.  Yes, Ash, Ritchie's and Fred Winters, them were t'days!  I'm still good friends with David and Pat Willingham and they eventually bought Fred Winters old place. When they sold up David had to excavate thousands of tons of contaminated earth from First Lane and have it disposed of before he was allowed to vacate the place.
Christine ran the Lotus Elan plus 2 for a good while before moving it on.  LOTUS - lots of trouble usually serious!  Colin Chapman only built them strong enough to get to the end of a race and no more. Worth cracking money now though!

I had this problem a while back on my spare 350/4 engine, which is actually the correct number for the bike.
I set to and made one on the lathe from stainless.
I have described the first part of it on my web site under CB 350/4 and it's part 4.

Hope this helps

No good borrowing my glasses ka-Ja, they're that thick that you need good eyesight just to see through 'em.

Definitely a wideline frame and could be a Norton Dominator 88 500cc or 99 600cc
You can just make out the twin down tubes and the plate which ties them together under the headstock.  You can also see the swing arm gusset plate - another giveaway.
I think the slimline frame came out in 59 for the 60 season, so must pre date that.
That Avon Handlebar fairing was glass fibre and almost 6 mm thick - my dad had one on his BSA Golden Flash outfit and had to trim a bit from the left hand side to clear the sidecar.  He gave me the off cut and a hammer to try to smash it (I was about 7 at the time). I failed miserably and I never forgot how strong glass fibre was.

A rock and a hard place then,
I realise his Dad will not know, but I think I would respect his wishes and not sell, but if he is insistent on that particular bike being cafe'd, then implore him not to sell the standard bits he removes and not chop lumps out of anything.  These bikes in that condition are on the up as everyone on this forum knows and parts are getting more difficult but if those apparently unwanted bits are moved on (even if we would love to buy them!) they will be difficult to come by if a change of plan emerges.  I'm not claiming the moral high ground here, we all did this in the 60's with now priceless Brit stuff.

I certainly agree with ST on that one, a real shame to alter what is heading towards a great bike.
Is it possible to persuade the owner to let you finish it and then sell it for strong money to finance a cafe job built from cheap non standard stuff?  He could end up with exactly what he wants for less overall outlay and someone else gets a nice useable classic.
Plenty of frames with V5 out there and enough bits around to satisfy his needs, I would have thought.

Can't add to your comprehensive list Ash, but mentioning Dunlop jogged my memory.  I bought a brand new VF 750S back in 1983 A474 JJX the shaft drive one called Sabre in US and the tyre label (perhaps on the swing arm or rear footrest hanger) actually said DUNROP. If anyone has an unrestored one I love a pic of that label.

Misc / Open / Re: Good year tax wise
« on: December 31, 2015, 12:34:36 PM »
Very true bryan ..They are indeed a law unto themselves. .
My dealings with them range from the simplest task turning into a nightmare to what you would have thought was going to be a right pain turning out to be one simple phone call.
In the new year I will try the hadleigh custom bike that is dated 01/01/75 as I want to get that out again this year anyway to use.
I will report back with what occurs..
For some obscure reason this rolling program only rolls on from 1st April, so my May 75 tagged GL 1000 will only qualify for historic status after April 2016, the nice lady told me after pressing 79 different options.  Another DVLA quirk is that if your machine is Sorned (which mine is at present) then you have to tax it first before applying for change of taxation class and you will lose a month.  So that means my GL will be 41 years old when I get free tax, wtf?
Exactly the same thing happened with my 400/4 but they mysteriously sat on my application (perhaps that's how they read them?) and I lost a further 3 months till it surfaced, even though I had proof of posting date - aargh!!
Mind you, as they had originally put back the reg date on this import to 1974 and gave it an M reg, it's one of the few historic status 400/4's around.  T'other cockup they made was using 398 as the capacity, so I've more than had my money.
