Other Bikes / Re: Z1 as a project?
« on: Today at 06:27:10 PM »
The only thing that connects to earth around there would be the starter relay that on mine had a tang on it for a female flying lead to connect to. Regulator and rectifier have the earth on multi blocks. That's the only three things near there. Long time since I built my Z1 so cant really remember what I did around there, but starter solenoid would be my guess. Is your solenoid an original Hitachi unit or some other make? It may have a short earth lead already soldered on with a male end.

Bugger, should have bought it.

It will still be 6k by the time it's finished though. Well above its retail value. Somebody will get a lot of enjoyment out of building it though.

I am pleased to report that the stem seals are now fitted. It seemed way easier the second time around. I won't be doing that again.

It's rough but so far the price is okay.

Not to mention the cost of the shims at a tenner a go.

Yes there is. It's the preferred modification on Suzuki powered drag bikes that for some reason people have adopted for the road. Your right about the special tool it's a doddle to change shims with that.

The pipes are off the GS1000 at the moment so an ideal time to give it a go. Thanks Oddjob.

That's the key, getting the bike at a good price. My 350F cost me £700 delivered and although rough was a complete bike. The total still hit 4k though. If I was to repeat that now even rough bikes are selling for 2.5k so no way could you build it for less than it's worth.

If you fancy making this bike absolutely perfect what about this NOS gem. It will always look good without the browning of a stainless set.

I've got mates that spend 1000s on a foreign holiday.  After a fortnight it's gone.  Good memories but it's over with.  A restored motorbike will give many years of pleasure and a sense of pride and achievement and, the cost will only t appreciate with time.
Couldn't agree more. My workmate has just dished out 7k for 2 weeks in the Maldives at the end of this year. Now for me that would be a heart breaking waste of money. He has no hobbies really, but if all your interested in is holidays you could have gone away three times for that amount.

Thanks folks for the feedback / advice...
Now to work out what colour / number I need and try and source them.
Stay tuned, I will no doubt have further questions.
And, just to keep a few of you busy I've posted a picture of handiwork by the previous owner so you might get an idea what I'm up against.

As always these old bike repairs are 25% mechanical wear and 75% previous owner abuse. Seems to be even worse on the American import bikes for some reason (Big Bubba).
Welcome to the forum by the way.
