CB350/400 / Re: MoT or Not?
« on: Today at 08:49:11 PM »
I have not had an MOT on my 550 since Feb 18, I keep it in tip top condition.

When they introduced the MOT exemption, it crossed my mind that what happens in an accident?

Suppose you have an accident and your insurance company asks the questions, was your bike roadworthy at the time of the accident and if so can you prove it?

We all know the lengths insurance companies will go to to avoid paying out.

Euro car parts do the spark plugs very cheap, last 4 with one of their codes cost me about £8 for 4

CB350/400 / Re: Sealed beam headlight

I don’t know if this is the same but my 74 550 had a sealed beam.
I bought a pair of standard 7 inch headlights for the original shape Mini for about £25 ish.
One fitted perfectly in a couple of minutes, no modifications.
One went to my mate for his Triumph.

Project Board / Re: Meet my new 550f2

have been chasing an oil leak from the cam end bolt area which seems to be a common fault with the 500/550. I had replaced the sealing washers but still leaked so checked out the l shaped  bracket that hods the end cap on. This proved to be bent and misshapen so replaced it with a spare i had. not now leaking but for good measure i am doing a modification which Trigger uses to make sure it stays oil tight. Have been out a couple of times when it has been a bit milder and running well, handles great and sounds great.
What’s the modification? I’m rebuilding my top end over the winter.

First day at college doing my apprenticeship new teacher walks in.

‘Hello, I’m Mister Eatwell, I’ll just write that on the board for you’
He went to the board and wrote ‘BASTARD’

Turned out he was a really nice bloke.

I have lost count of the times I have gone to hospitals to remove things stuck to the front of the scanners.
Chairs, trolleys, bins, floor polishers. Despite the signs on the door saying no metal.

It’s not an easy task removing them, takes around a day.

My colleague has even had to go abroad to remove a gun  :o

I get to play with electrics / electronics every day.

I have a lovely job tomorrow, I have to re-establish the magnetic field in an MRI scanner which involves slowly taking the electromagnet inside up to just over 500 Amps. The windings have to be cooled constantly with liquid Helium at -269 Degrees.
What could possibly go wrong. ;D

I was going to rebuild the top end of my 550 but I was going to get the barrels and head blasted.

Expect the blasters will be shut now.

CB500/550 / Re: Cb550 1975 main fuse sizes
« on: November 01, 2020, 05:30:05 PM »
I found that with the standard fuse box the fuses would vibrate downwards and come out of their holders.
Even with squeezing the holder together they still did it.

Replaced with a 4 way blade fuse box, so i have a spare as well.

CB500/550 / Top end rebuild, do I replace the camchain?
« on: October 27, 2020, 03:14:42 PM »
My 550 runs and rides pretty good, no obvious knocks or rattles or smoke.

I'm going to rebuild the top end over the winter simply because I have a few oil leaks coming from between the barrels and the head.

I'll do the usual things but just wondered if its worth changing the cam chain while its apart?

Bike has done 16K miles, obviously I don't know how well its been looked after over its life, I've done about 1500 miles in the last couple of years on it without any problems.
