I cant remember now, my mate lived in Whitton just near Hounslow and it wasn't far from his house.

Sorry to hijack this thread but i'm planning a top end rebuild on the 550 over the winter to cure the oil leaks.

I'm not going to open the bottom end but want to clean it up and paint it.

What are my options when it comes to curing the paint on the bottom half?

Thanks for all the info.

I fell in love with them in the mid 90’s. I gave a lift to my mate to collect a CBR400 he had just bought from a bike shop near Heathrow.

This shop was in a small parade, while we were in there doing the paperwork all this loud music started from upstairs.
The shop owner started moaning about the people in the flat above, he went out the back and wheeled in this CBX1000.
Started it up and spent a few minutes revving the nuts off it. Music quickly stopped.

I’ve lost count of the amount of bikes I’ve had on watching from that seller.

Most have no reserve and if they are not achieving what he wants for them, he pulls the ad just before it’s due to finish.

I don't know if this is even possible but could the cam have sheared in two?

So if only a part of the cam is turning you could get more than one compression stroke at a time and therefore way more difficult to turn engine?

As I said I don't know if this is even possible but a mate of mine did have a cam shear in two in his car once.

This is one of the best threads ever.

Almost as good as when I was a kid eagerly waiting to find out who shot JR in Dallas.

I have a 4.25 rear in my 550. Fitted by previous owner.

Going to go back to 4.0 when I replace.

Why does the second pic remind me of a naughty dog facing the wall?

Welcome, I’m just over the border to you. On the Bucks / Oxon border by J5 M40.

I’ve also got a 74 550 K0.

Looking on the web, You Tube it says not to sand the top coat before lacquer.

If you have a spray booth this is probably ok, but if like me you are doing it in a garage then your are almost certainly going to get a bit of dust, bug etc on it.

I did have a couple of tiny marks in the final orange coat so I went over it with 2500 wet and dry and got it glass smooth.
It had gone a bit dull by then and I thought I had screwed it up, so I decided I had nothing to lose. I dried it and then went over it with T-Cut and got the shine right back up.

Then washed with soapy water, rinsed, dried overnight. Next day de-greased with meths and then Lacquered.

Fantastic job Steve. How many coats of the orange did you need?

ps. It's not everyday you see a flamingo in your back garden!  ;D

I did 4 coats but had trouble with stripy line effect so had to rub back a bit and apply a couple more.

The Flamingos are the wife’s, she has about a dozen.
