Age related registration and MOT's

Hi All.
I wasn't sure where to put this topic so settled on Projects!
I cannot find the answer to this so maybe someone who has a similar experience can enlighten me, here goes;

If a bike has been imported in the last couple of years, is over 40 years old and has been given an age related plate by DVLA can:
A) Historic vehicle status be applied for and,
B) If A above doesn't apply will it therefore need to be MOT'd even though it is over 40 years old?

I'd like to apply for historic status but the DVLA site doesn't provide the info I'm looking for. Has anyone had any experience with this in the past with an imported bike?

Dave, I imported my bike and when I applied for my registration in uk, I applied for historic at the same time. No mot required as far as I am aware. Not all post offices are singing from the same song sheet regarding this matter. Depends on training given.
Whether it’s been imported or otherwise shouldn’t make any difference regarding Historic status.

While im not in exactly the same position ill be asking the same questions myself as mine is tax exempt (i think by literally 2 months or something like that) and i think MOT exempt but im not sure - hence the questions but, for the moment ill just be concentrating on building it.!

Over 40 yrs old is no tax or mot BUT only counts from the April after the 40th birthday, download an mot exemtion form from dvla for use at post office

MOT exempt from the day it turns 40, eligible for Historic status from April 1st of the following year. It doesn't need to be MOT'd to apply for historic status. It makes no difference to the process if its an import.
Change it to Historic at the Post Office, its done instantly on the spot and DVLA will send you a new V5 with the taxation class showing as Historic. Tax the bike once a year at £Zero online, takes less than a minute.

At the start of 2022 I  had no luck doing it via our local  Post Office the V5 came back unchanged.
I had to insure the bike, complete a V10 and post it to DVLA Swansea with the Mot exemption form available online.
There seems to be a lack of consistency across Post Offices.

Ted, like you, every bike I have done has been different. One bike was even automatically done by the DVLA and I even got an automatic refund on the tax. Another took so long that the tax refund was almost half of what it should have been....

If DVLA are doing their job correctly, if the bike is already taxed, the process of changing to Historic is done automatically. But, its not very often they do their job properly these days 😂😂😂😂.

I still have my old paper driving licence and need to renew it for the photocard type (I tried to book a hire car a few weeks ago and they refused my licence, the wife had to hire it, I will never use Eurocar again!). I am seriously dreading sending my licence away it as I know of two people who did this and when the licence was returned the motorcycle category was missing! despite protests the DVLA refused to add it and also refused to accept a photocopy of the paper licence as proof! One of these people had to retake their motorcycle test.

My advice is to make sure you photo copy your old paper licence before you send it off as that might help if they miss any groups off that you have passed your test for.
I kept my all green paper licence until I was 70 as we lived at the same address since 1984 so my photo licence was free and it came back correct.

If you have a current passport its pretty straight forwards to prove identity - a bit more tricky if not. My problem was understanding the new groups on a photo licence - it aint Group D anymore!
