Looks like a good start point for a 400/4, I just wondered if those rubber blocks around the air intake worked? Looks like you had a go in the photos.

Hi biffta i put the rubbers on when i first got the bike it had a fibre glass seat base and it was all cracked, i noticed it was virtually blocking the intake off, not sure if it did any good mind its was running rich before i stripped it, ill see how it goes after the rebuild, regards jonny
