Exhaust gaskets: Copper or alu/fibre?
« on: May 24, 2020, 08:43:35 AM »
Refurbing my exhaust system and need to purchase new exhaust gaskets.
I can obtain both copper, or aluminium/fibre items at the same price.
Which is considered to be the best?
TIA!

I prefer the alloy version.

Purely a preference.
No real reason

Does any of you know what the white fibre is, if not asbestos?

I bought a pack of 10 alloy/fibre for 10 quid off fleabay.  Fit well and much cheaper than some on offer.  Long gone the asbestos rope of old.  You can still use log burner door rope for that authentic finish.  Even cheaper.

They were originally the copper ring type but a lot of sets had the white rope with copper wire

That reminds me of an audit I was involved in on one of the ships I was on. The auditor was going through the stores list and came accross an entry for “CAF” jointing. CAF stood for compressed asbestos fibre. He asked, “Why did we have asbestos on board?” It wasn’t asbestos, the old terminology had been wrongly used. Thinking on my feet I said, “ CAF, completely asbestos free”. Thankfully he saw the funny side.
