SMF 2.0: What do you think?
« on: June 18, 2011, 10:04:13 AM »
Hi everyone.

Now that SMF 2.0 has moved from the Release Candidate into full release, I was thinking of upgrading the forum.

Glenn Stauffer did this on http://forums.sohc4.net a few months ago (he was using RC5) so take a look over there and let me know what you think.

My main reason for wanting to change is that the new software has far better security and spam resistance. At the moment I get about 30-40 spam registrations per day. It only needs one to get through to swamp the boards...

Also, this version of SMF is now only updated with bug fixes as the focus has moved on.

What do you think?

Hi Steve, It's natural to resist change and it's so easy to say "that's a bad idea" but in the end we are very adaptable, so if it is better and safer I would go for it. If it was a set of new improved more efficient brake pads I would surely buy them.

Steve, the SOHC4 forum has been spoilt a bit in my opinion, i really struggle to get the enthusiasm to go there now, my problem is that the bold text should be the thread title and not the name of thread starter, and so now my eyes really struggle to pick out the title when scanning through quickly
I like the way we are set up now on this site, although my opinion means very little , and what will be will be i thought i would just mention incase you should take on board my views, keep the bold font in the thread title and it would be so much better

There was some dissent initially at .net but as Den says, we get used to it. I can even find my way around Windows 7 now!

I will have to change eventually, it depends upon how long the 1.1.x version stays supported.

I like the ease of use of the add-ins on 2.0 - the gallery, calendar, advertising and treasury modules especially [when John transferred this site to me, the first thing I was hit with was a

Gosh, shows how rarely I go to the USA site.  I just looked and it seems fine to me, not much different really and if it means better security then we should do it.  I'm not sure about the advertisements though?

I don't like the change they have made, it just seems to have lost "clarity" and ease of use.  Same as UKPete I have trouble picking up the title when scanning through quickly BUT if its better security I suppose we will get used to it!

Like most things, software etc moves on. The newer version has better security as a big plus.
Even if the site is a bit more difficult to navigate, the effort is worth it as the consequences of staying on the early stuff are too big.
We may be a bit long in the tooth, but should be capable of adapting to a new look for the site.
In a couple of months, we will not remember the present version.
Thanks for thinking of us Steve.

Upgraded the forum on Boxing Day.

So far so good.

I'll be playing with some of the customisation features over the next few days/weeks. If anybody wants to trawl around simplemachines.org and suggest any of the fancy stuff you see there - just let me know.

It would be if I'd remembered to re-install the anti-spam features...

Installed software and went to football (won 3-0)

Got home to find 198 "new" members and loads of spam.

Have turned off registration, deleted all of them and will install anti-spam stuff when I get back from dinner.

I couldn't believe it when I logged on earlier. Post after post, all from 1st timers.
I referred a couple to you after finding that the links threw up a 'Severe Threat' warning.
Glad it's sorted and thanks for the time and effort you put in.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday. :)

I'm a Administrator/Moderator on another forum and totally understand the 30 to 40 new registrations a day, and them all being (PIA fekkin) spammers. Anything to get rid of these parasites is only a good thing, Ok sometimes it causes a bit of "having to get used to the new layout" but compared to the hassle the spammers cause the Admin, this is little discomfort.

Applause to Steve.

I also understand the resistance to change, after all, we ride motorcycles that are so fekkin out of date who could blame us ;D ;D ;D
